I HAVE FOUND A SPORT TO BE OBSESSED WITH!
Last week my friend Smidie took me and Nichole to an Australian Rules Football (AFL) game. It's also called footy. We went to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to see the Essendon Bombers play Carlton. People were screaming and yelling all around us (lots of cursing haha) There were 65,000 people there and it was amazing! I still don't know a lot of the rules, but I know enough to get really into it. The guys don't have any padding (just little shorts and a jersey) and they run all over this field with the yellow footy trying to score a goal. It's like a combination of American football and soccer. The guys are super fit and have to keep running around the whole time.
Anyways, Essendon kicked Carlton's butt and it was glorious. Essendon is my team and I love them very much. My favorite player is number 13, Andrew Lovett. He's an aboriginal player (Essendon has one of the highest ratios of Aboriginal players in the sport) and he's extremely fast. He ran across the field and made a goal one time so fast that people didn't really
know what had just happened. The energy in the MCG was infectious and it was easy to get into the game. We left happy since our team had won.
In between my footy games, Brenna, Nichole and I went to the Queen Victoria Market this past Friday. IT IS HUGE. IT IS AMAZING. IT IS CHEAP. You will all probably be getting souvenirs from there. There are dozens of fruit and vegetable stands, wine stands, fish stands, rows of little stands selling souvenirs and stuff, it's great. I bought an Essendon Bombers scarf so I could have the team colors on me at games. Lots of people bring scarves to the game so they can swing them around during the game.
Friday night, we went to another game, this time in the Telstra Dome. The MCG is much better than the Telstra Dome. It's bigger and cleaner (and the french fries are better...an occasional indulgence, don't worry). This time we went with a big group of people from Chisholm because it was a college event. There were probably 12 of us there. We were up much higher than we were in the MCG, but it was still a
great view because we were in the middle of both the goalposts and could see everything that was happening. This time Essendon was playing the Western Bulldogs. We usually lose against them but we had hope that they would win out this time. Western pulled ahead in the beginning but by the 2nd quarter we had made up a 5 goal defecit, which is quite a feat. We were actually in the lead for a little while as well. We were all happy and it was going really well. AND THEN...they got tired. The 4th quarter sucked. They couldn't hold onto the ball (butter fingers) and Western made probably 4 goals within 10 minutes. It was horrible. We all got frustrated. They looked like they had given up and Western started screwing around and running down the clock. So, the Bombers ended up losing by 30 points and we were very sad and griped about it the whole tram ride back to La Trobe.
But anyways, going to the footy is so much fun, and it isn't that expensive. It's about $15 so it's a great thing to do when you don't have much money to throw around. I've
so many people
65,00! hope this picture helps you see how many people were there! been really trying to curb my spending lately. This week I plan on being on a shoestring budget. I do have to go to the market to get some veggies and fruit (I'm craving cucumbers and oranges) but the market is cheap and the produce is local. I can't wait to make cucumber and hummus sandwiches. I'm going to be trying to get back to a more close to vegan lifestyle. I want to get away from cheese as much as possible and replace it with more veggies. Cheese has been making me feel sluggish and fat so I want it to go away haha. I've also been going on a run a few times a week in a park that's adjacent to campus, and that feels really good. It goes side by side with the moat that surrounds out campus so there's always ducks and geese out and it's just a really pretty run. Hopefully I'll be in better shape when I come home.
Love you all so much and miss you like crazy! Can't wait to see everyone again!
xoxo,
Amanda
