KG Entrance
The east gate entrance to the Kansai Gaidai campus, which is where I enter campus every day Konnichiwa!!
Well I finally got a little break this weekend from my usual busy schedule of traveling and other things. Leilani went to Tokyo for the weekend so I was left all alone here. But even though I didn't do any major traveling, it turned out to be an awesome weekend! But anyway, that's not the point of this post...
I thought I would take some time to talk about Hirakata, the city in Osaka where I live and go to school. Hirakata is to Osaka what Maryville is to Knoxville...except that Osaka is about 10 times bigger and more fun than Knoxville! I usually don't go into downtown Hirakata City that much, except to go the bank and Hirakata station. We often complain about how boring Hirakata is, but me and Leilani actually found out that it's not that bad of a city. One day we went shopping at the Vivre in Hirakata and were surprised to find they had a lot of the same stores we shopped at in Shinsaibashi and Kyoto! And there's also this toriniku place in Hirakata we call 280 since all the food and dirnks there cost 280 Yen. It's a popular place
Down the Street...
From the bus stop outside the east gate, this is the street I go down to get back to the Seminar House to go with friends, especially for birthday parties and on the weeknights. The famous drink there among us international students is the ooki biru (big beer), because it's so big and only 280 Y. And just recently me and Leilani have discovered that the cabbage there is also AMAZING! I know, you wouldn't think cabbage is that appetizing...but somehow I've become obsessed with it over here. At 280 they give you unlimited refills of cabbage and it is covered with the soy sauce/vinegar dressing that's so good. I think me and Lani ate 5 bowls one night! And I've even started buying cabbage from the grocery store, along with sesame dressing, and I'll just eat that with some tofu for lunch or dinner. Believe me, I never thought I would be eating tofu and cabbage as a meal and actually like it, but now it's become one of my favorite things to eat in Japan! They also have this potato/cheese fried thing at 280 that's so greasy and so unhealthy, but for some reason we find ourselves craving it every time we go there! Even though it makes us sick to think about how unhealthy it is...
And speaking
Other Direction
In the other direction is the incredibly small and dangerous street I have to ride down to get to the grocery store. This is where I have the greatest chance of dying! of unhealthy...
I'm about to tell the most sickening story ever! I would like to forget this incident and probably shouldn't be sharing it with everyone, because I'm not proud of it, but it's so good that I just have to! Oh and Lani's going to kill me if she ever finds out that I wrote about this...we kind of agreed to keep it between the 2 of us. But oh well...
So one evening we went to Hirakata to do some shopping. It was probably the beginning of March, and for some reason we were both craving hamburgers like crazy! I guess it's because we don't get to eat a lot of meat over here, and the food we eat never seems to be filling, and the portions are very small...but whatever the reason, we were craving hamburgers really bad. So we decided to try the Mos Burger, which is a popular burger place here. They have these special hamburgers with chili, so we figured we should try them. We found the Mos Burger in Hirakata and ordered our meals, which consisted of: a hamburger, fries, and a glass of lemon water. And on top of that
Elevator
The colorful elevator at the Vivre shopping center we each ordered a bowl of clam chowder. And it was the most amazing meal I've ever had! Maybe it's because we wanted to eat hamburgers so bad, but it was really really good. So we ate our entire meal really fast, but then when we were finished we still felt hungry. We thought about ordering another burger, but then we remembered that there was a McDonald's nearby, and we had seen an advertisement for choco-pies on the way that we had wanted to try. So we went straight from Mos Burger to the McDonald's down the street. And at the McDonald's we ordered each ordered a cheeseburger and a choco-pie. The choco-pie was ok...it was just really greasy and didn't have much taste. But after we had eaten our McDonald's meal we just sat there and were like, "Why did we do that?" The McDonald's trip was completely unnecessary. In fact, we were so full after our second meal that we couldn't even look at another hamburger for a long time! Ughh it's so gross to think about how much food we ate that night. We were so disgusted with ourselves! lol.
And then another time we went
Escalator
The awesome spiral escalator in Vivre...such an awesome place! to the KFC in Hirakata. We tried these spicy chicken pieces and seasoned fries, which were really good! But other than that, the KFC wasn't anything special. Although the fries were a lot better than McDonald's fries...
So that's a little bit about Hirakata City! It's not a bad city, just not as excitng as the big cities like Osaka and Kyoto. Wow, I just realized how much this post focused on food and nothing else, except a little bit about shopping...but I guess that's how my life is here. Just food and shopping...my 2 favorite things!
