Walking over Story Bridge
Going of a walk over the bridge, leaving UQ campus Hey there all! It's been a good weekend, I'd say. Friday night, I got together with Nell and Katy to have fairy bread, which is spectacular. It's just white bread that's been buttered and dipped into 100s and 1000s (sprinkles, the little round dot ones), but it's yum. Evidently it's what all Ozzie kids have at birthday parties, and I can say it's a delicious, child(Emily)-friendly food that's cheap to make. Nell, as the Australian, oversaw the fairy-bread making.
Nell even gave me an early Easter gift --Connecter Pens! I was thrilled to bits. I've seen Nell's and really wanted some (being such a little kid myself). Basically they're markers but they're connected with clips at the caps, so if you've got enough you could clip all the caps together and stand them in a circle. I love them! They color really well and they're supercool and superfun.
After eating heaps of fairy-bread, we watched a movie. Ellieen and Sam came over to join Katy, Nell and myself. We watched Juno, which was OK... not my new favorite movie but a good way to spend the evening. As it was a comedy-sort, I didn't have to 'run away' (Mom...)
Over the river...
Looking back from Dutton Park towards UQ Campus as I usually do. I'm such a movie chicken. >__<
When the movie finished, Nell, Katy and myself hung around and talked. Nell's boyfriend, Trent, came to join us, and we all chatted until Katy left to go pack for the MARS trip she was going on the next day (she still needed to pack and it was about 1:30 AM and the bus left at 7:30 that morning!), and I went back to my room to go to bed.
On Saturday, I went to Toowong and search high and low for aquasocks (basically those water shoes with rubberized bottoms and wet-suit material tops that are great for intertidaling in rocky areas). MARS required that you have water shoes, either sneakers (mine are brand new), an aqua-sock type shoe (which I didn't have), gumboots (rain boots, which are in storage at school), or snorkel/scuba booties (which I didn't own, except for a fake pair that wouldn't really protect my feet as the bottoms weren't rubberized except for the toes and heel). I went everywhere around the shopping center and even into the stores in the area surrounding the place, but was unable to find what I was looking
Great Court
Because the sandstone and evening light is very attractive. ^__^ for. (I wasn't surprised that I couldn't find any, b/c it's coming close to autumn and winter here, and aquasocks are definitely out of season).
After being shocked at the price of the only water shoes I did find (a pair of Merril sneakers at an outdoors store that were $165, on sale from $200), I asked the clerk where else I could look. I was getting slightly frustrated at that point, because I'd been looking all morning. She told me to check the dive store up the street for shoes. There, I found dive booties in my size for $40; soft-bottom, rubberized, zip-up the side to above your ankles, perfect water shoes. Hopefully I don't destroy them reefwalking for MARS, because I'd love to be able to use them next summer (and any other time) that I go snorkeling. They're really comfy and really nice. I was satisfied, but really wish that I'd found just plain aquasocks--mine for FHL last summer cost me $3 at Giant in PA. Perfect for destroying, which I did by the end of the summer. Yarg, I wish MARS had let me know earlier that I'd needed these shoes; even a week or
Ferris-Wheel!
Which little kid wouldn't want a ride on this? Welcome to the Rocklea Markets! two ago I may have had more luck finding those things.
Anyways, I went back to Uni and tried to do work, but couldn't concentrate b/c there was loud music playing. I ended up going to Great Court to sit on the lawn and read my book. I saw two weddings come through for photos--there are so many people who come here every weekend from their weddings in order to be photographed. I don't know if they're alums or just like the scenery, but I've seen about 5 or 6 different wedding groups on different weekends since I've been here.
Today, I went into Rocklea with Elieen to check out the farmer's market there. I guess Saturday is the fresh produce day, and Sunday is the flea-market-ish day. It was amazing what was for sale. You could get yourself the regular flea market stuff (ie: old coins, used books, teeshirts, bags), food (German sausage perhaps? Greek food? Take your pick...), plants (cut flowers, flowers for planting, greenery for your garden, succulents and cacti for your desk...), a new best friend (goldfish or other fishy friends, parakeets and other assorted birds, crayfish or snails for your aquagarden, some weird
Birds!
Did anyone want a pet quail? I think they were $15; look to the left side of the photo axotol looking things, and guinea pigs). I was surprised by all the pets for sale--all the fish I inspected looked very healthy (no diseases that I could see, peppy and swimming, no dead ones), and all the birds looked great (healthy, alert, no feathers missing, flying around their (usually) quite large cages, no fighting between birds).
I came back and finished my Aboriginal Art paper (mostly, I still have to write the conclusion; this seems to be a trend for all the papers that I write...). My work is done except for trying to get a jump start on studying genetics, which will be tested after Easter break (12 April = Saturday exam. yargh).
