Katy and 'Strawberry Fields'
Strawberries, strawberry sauce, ice cream and two buttermilk pancakes Hi all! I hope all is going well at home. Yesterday I had a good time exploring downtown Brissy with Katy, successfully bought myself a dress (gasp!) to wear to formal occasions at IH, and caught up with Michelle, my friend from the NZ tour.
I woke up early yesterday morning, went to the library to work on my paper for MARS (which is like the easiest assignment ever, but I'm so desperate for homework that I eagerly ran off to go do my work... I'm writing one paragraph about a marine organism of my choice from the great barrier reef. I was going to do a nudibranch (sea slug) because they're so cool, but no one wrote any good papers--I switched to the blue-ringed octopus). I checked out "Toxic Plants and Animals: A guide for Australia," as well as the text we use in genetics, so that I can get some reading done.
I then met Katy at about 11ish, and we headed into the city. We both can't quite figure out the busses here; the correct number bus will pull up, let people off and let some on, and then the driver will tell you that you're
Me and 'The Ultimate Crepe'
Two crepes filled with cream cheese and sultanas (lemon-flavored inside) with raspberry sauce and ice cream not allowed on yet, and zoom off, only to return (the same bus and driver) about five minutes later. Where they go and what they do, and why some people are allowed on at that point has me baffled... Anyhow, we bussed to the shopping center at Toowong, where Katy got her phone minutes recharged, and where we walked into K-Mart, just to browse. I was looking for a new dress to wear on formal occasions, like Bara Kava, but all the dresses there were absolutely ugly.
We then caught the bus into Brisbane, where we went to the pancake house that Kate had heard of to get some lunch. There was a forty minute wait, so we put our names down for a reservation and walked to Queeenstreet Mall. On the way to the mall, we passed by a dress store that was going out of business, so we popped in for a look. It was there that I found my dress, originally for $70, but I got it for $20. It fits really well, and I love the pattern (it's white with flowers all over, I'll take a picture of me in it soon...). I was quite
pleased, and it was the last one left! We then headed to the Target in Queenstreet Mall, where Kate and I bought shoes. I bought a pair of pink (a color I'd never usually think to wear...) flats, and Kate bought a pair of nice heeled sandals. I think I frightened the checkout clerk--the shoes were supposed to be $7, but rang up as $3, and I got very excited and started dancing around. I think she was quite surprised, but I was quite pleased. ^__^
We then headed back to the pancake house, ordered our late lunch, and devoured it all. The pancake house is in an old church, so the pews are the seats, and room is a quite large with a vaulted ceiling, stained glass, and large arches. It's pretty neat, and the food is delicious. It was worth the wait for the meal!
We then walked to the Queensland Museum, which was really great. It's free admission, and the displays are really nice. We had a great time and didn't even come close to finishing the entire museum. I can't wait to get back there and keep looking around sometime soon. They also have
a nice ID section of the museum, so you can go look at museum specimens of certain animals, and ask them questions about the large, unidentified creatures that you've seen around your backyard. It was quite cool. Evidently there's an aviary and little zoo (bugs and such, I think) attached to the museum as well, so that I definitely want to check out soon...
After the museum closed and made us leave, Katy and I chatted for a while, and then went back to Queenstreet Mall, where we were going to meet up with Michelle. We walked into a bookstore that was having a closing down sale, discovered that all the books were really strange, and then caught up with Michelle. We were originally going to eat out at a restaurant, but ended up just having a pub meal. The food was good; Katy and I were still full from lunch so we split a BLT, and Michelle got fish and chips. It was really great to catch up with Michelle! I'm glad she's doing well, and it seems like she's been quite busy with work and housing. We chatted for a while, and all were zoning out in
Eeep!
Katy and some giant preserved spiders at the Queensland Museum the pub; Katy and I had had a long day walking around the city, and Michelle had had a long day at work and was moving in to house-sit for a friend early the next morning. We ended up leaving the pub at about 8sih, and caught the 8:30 bus back to UQ.
I basically came back here and collapsed; I was tired after a long day around the city! It had been lots of fun, though. Katy's a really fun girl to hang around with--we had lots of fun taking funny pictures around the museum, and I really enjoyed meeting up with Michelle again. Anyhow, I hope all is well at home, can't wait to hear from you soon!
