Our new pet
We have a opossum lurking around--I had never even SEEN one before! I think I'll name him Diego :0) ....well until O-Week 2009, that is!! Hi everyone! Sorry it's taken me some time to send out another update--things have been getting very busy (and very fun)! We wrapped up our O-Week 2008 Thursday night with a wonderful off-campus trip....but let me back track a few days to where I left off...
After we had gone through enrolment at the beginning of the week, we had several more opportunities to get to know our building mates. Through building dinners, outings throughout the city, and trips to the super market, we've all had the chance to really learn more about one another and our backgrounds. For the most part, I have made several friends who are studying Engineering. Here in Australia, there is a huge push for engineers, and more specifically Environmental engineers. This job occupation is most clearly seen in the layout of the city and the design of several buildings/homes/facilities. It's been exciting to see a whole new set of interests on campus! I haven't met too many students who are involved in International Relations like myself, but I'm sure they are lurking around 😊
We have a large Entertainment Centre at the base of our Hall
Stain Glass Beauty
This is one of the walls of the Rotunda--where we had our orientation with the Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Arts of Residence. Many nights during the week, we've had special screenings of all kinds of movies, tv shows, and fiilms. It's been really neat to see some of the contributions that some of the students bring to watch! I have found that I really enjoy watching foreign films, but the one thing I have not been able to grasp has been the subtitle reading/comprehension of the story line. But perhaps with more foreign film practice, I can get better!
Also during O-Week, we had our very own school dance! Known as "The Rob-O Black Light Party," obviously we were restricted to wearing either black or white clothing. When we went into the dance hall (which was our transformed common room), we either blended into the darkness, or glowed from our white attire. The entire night was great, as I had the chance to really meet a lot of new people and dance the night away to some of the great songs of the early 90's!
On our last night of O-Week, our RAs decided to pack us into buses and take us back to St. Kilda Beach, where we started our O-Week expeditions last Sunday. This time, however,
Activities Fair
Soooo many clubs came out to lure us into joining them and participating in several activities throughout the year we were headed to Luna Park, a great attractions for children and adults (or so they told us!). As we were the only allowed patrons into the amusement park that night, we had unlimited use of all rides and games. It was so nice to really go back to our childhood and ride carousels, scream at the top of our lungs on the "scary" rollercoasters, and even stand in the longest lines for rides that were more humourous than they were frightening. All in all, it was a nice opportunity to laugh with everyone, take pictures, eat some carnival food, and relax from all of the events of the week. Now...we have to move on to the real fun....taking classes 😊
