Edit Blog Post
Ok, so welcome to our last blog from Bali. We are flying out to Tokyo tonight at 5 to midnight! YUK!
Since our last entry we have spent much time sleeping, swimming, eating (sounds a lot like our last post huh?), browsing the shops and stalls and catching up with Toby and his family for little Tasya's 3rd birthday. It's been bliss!
Almost a week ago we left Ubud and moved onto our next hotel in Sanur beach, however all did not go as expected...
There seems to be a charming custom at Bali hotels to greet the guest with a cold drink. Usually a delicious fruit juice blend from our (limited) experience. This was no different upon arrival at our hotel in Sanur except the drink appeared to be a weak mix of Bi-Lo's finet home brand orange cordial. Not a disaster at all but a sign of things to come perhaps! We were shown to our room and our porter immediately cranked up the air conditioner by pressing random buttons about a hundred times. He had left by the time the air con caught up with the button presses and started doing a fine impression of

He finally gave up and went to check out the bathroom... oh God! The toilet seat was stained a sort of splotchy grey which seemed odd until he noticed that was the colour of the water in the toilet. A quick flush will right this wrong, yes? No. That's just the way it is! Of course the water in the taps wouldn't be grey, would it? No, it wasn't. It was PURPLE! However after a few seconds of running it settled down to a more comfortable shade of brown. EEEK!
The hotel responded to our call for help in a zippy half an hour by sending their top man, complete with screwdriver, pliers and masking tape. Huh? We sat in the room watching our good man attempt to fix the air conditioner with the following methods: 1st - m ore button pressing with a predictable lack of result. 2nd - hitting the unit on alternating sides with his fist - no improvement. 3rd - removing several plastic covers and putting them back on again (which incorporated some

Some on the left, some on the right, some on the top... some more on the left... you get the picture. After some head scratching at the lack of progress he tried jamming his screwdriver up between the unit and the wall! AHAH! Improvement! More head scratching. You could almost see the light bulb above his head as he disappeared into the bathroom. If Kerry wasn't having enough trouble holding in her laughter at this stage, it only got harder when he re-appeared from the bathroom and began stuffing a wad of toilet paper behind the AC unit with the end of his screwdriver. It was indeed (a minor) improvement so he started removing the tape, then screwed that up and stuffed that up there too!
Shortly after our man got down from his ladder to admire his work the air conditioner started vibrating loudly again with renewed gusto. Our man was on the phone in a flash which he shortly handed to Lee. A little voice on the other end said "Sorry, can't fix air conditioner... you change room, yes?" YES!
He didn't even try to fix the

Our new room was better. The water was the right lack of colour and the air conditioner was quiet enough. We would at least be able to sleep. We obviously weren't totally convinced though as we didn't unpack just yet. Good thing too. The next day when we related this story to Lee's cousin and added the fact that Kerry's eye swelled up every time we went in the room, he immediately got on the phone to locate us a new hotel.
Please be aware that our experiences at this hotel are by no means 'the norm'. We think this was just a case of one hotel in need of some updating - and in it's defense there were signs around that this was in process. It was just a case of wrong rooms at the wrong time for us.
And so it is we have spent the last 5 nights at Kuta instead of Sanur with many thanks to Toby!
Speaking of Toby, he sure can recommend some great places! We have had great breaky at Dulang - and will go there again for our last Bali dinner shortly. Lovely pizzas at Papa's with

Local knowledge prevailed as she obviously knew what was coming, leaving a short time later. a gecko for a table guest 😊. Amazing donuts at J.Co - when you are in Bali you HAVE to try them! We had a fantastic lunch with him at Ku De Ta and loved it so much we went back last night for dinner. Ku De Ta is huge courtyard bar/bistro/restaurant right on the beach. With only a few hours left in Bali we don't have time to describe how good it is! Lee claims his meal there was his best ever (sorry Mum!) and Kerry has fallen in love with Lychee Martinis. Check out some of the photos from last night.
So please have a gander at our new pics. We hope to be able to upload pictures in greater quantities with future posts - just depends on internet speeds.
Much love till next time,
K&L
