If you're short on mates or just need your faith in humanity restored, get yourself a wheelchair and head for Sydney on New Years Eve. The world and his wife will want to shake your hand and girls who'd never normally look at you twice will be compelled by pity to kiss you and wish you a happy new year. I'm not kidding, we couldn't go 30 seconds without something like this happening. And all thanks to the wonder of narcotics. Marvellous.

We had to leave things a bit late, as usual, and didn't book the hotel until midday Old Year's Night, but managed to get into a place overlooking Darling Harbour. You could even see the harbour itself from the balcony - we couldn't believe our luck to be honest. And it had a fridge for the vodka. They have a another fireworks display for the kids at 9 o'clock, so we watched them from the balcony along with a load of lads partying in the flats opposite. They launch most of the fireworks from barges in the harbour and, as luck would have it, one of them was directly in front of us. Darling Harbour had their own display going on behind us and we could see them reflected in the widows of the building opposite. Lots of red crackly things as I remember. And letters in the sky plugging The Simpsons Movie.

Had a bit of a kip before the main event, fortified myself with the odd vodka or two and then hit the streets powered by a fired-up Ange. It was a fair old push for her, so it's a miracle she still loves me. The streets were pretty deserted for most of the way and only started to fill up as we got to the harbour itself. Managed to get under the bridge and all the way to Dawes Point, literally as close to the south end of the bridge as you'd want to be with bombs going off above you.

I didn't think we had a chance in hell of getting so close to thing - I really was amazed that we weren't half way into town getting the odd glimpse over the top of the buildings at all the fun going on further north - and there we were with as good a view as you could dream of. Ten had even set up their outdoor studio right behind us, that's how good it was. Had a lot of help from a nice couple from England and another lad on my left keeping my view clear - people were so good to me all night I can't tell you - so by the time midnight came I could still see everything perfectly.

Afraid we haven't got any photographs of the fireworks, but, hopefully, the video will work ok. Can't get it to play on here, so I've had to put it on YouTube. Just copy and paste the link and it should send you straight to it and not some squirrel riding a bike or summat.

They were mind blowing, that's all you really need to know. And hearing the cheers of a million and a half people go up when the big ones went off sent tingles up your spine.

As you all know, it's one night I'll never forget. Hope you enjoy watching it too.
