But don´t feel too sorry for us, we still have 4 weeks left in South America. We finally had to admit that the travel funds won´t last forever and at some point in the near future we will have to return to the real world. . . . . or at least as close to the real world that Matt and I lived in before we left 😊
Here are the tenative plans for the next 4 weeks. Today is our last day in El Calefate. Tomorrow we are heading to Puerto Natales, Chile. Probably stay there for a few days then head to Punta Areanas. That´s where we get to see the penguins! From there we will go to Rio Grande where we have a car from the 26th-30th of January. That means we get to drive around Tierra del Fuego and find more of the crazy Patagonian animals for Matt to chase. Actaully, it is supposed to be some of the best fishing in the world. This means Matt will be fishing and I get to catch up on my reading for 5 days. . . . hopefully I´ll get fish for dinner every night! From there we
will catch a bus to Ushuaia for a couple days. From there we have a flight to Buenos Aires on the 2nd of Feb. We heard the city is amazing and will probably stay for 2 or 3 days before getting a bus to Santiago, Chile. Santiago isn´t supposed to be that great, but there are supposed to be amazing beach towns just outside the city. We thought it would be very fitting to spend our last week in South America soaking up the sun on the beach. It just wouldn´t be right to come home without a tan! Then we have a flight on the morning of the 13th from Santiago to Miami. From there we need to go to Tampa, pick up the car and everything we left there, and drive back to Portland. We aren´t sure how long that will take but hopefully we will be back within a week.
That being said, we still have a lot of adventures ahead of us. . . . back to the current events of the super vacation!
The day after Matt wrote the fishing blog he went out to try his luck on the river again. He
was much luckier on this river. He´ll have to write about he specifics of the fishing but he did come back to camp with 2 fish for dinner and pictures of another really big rainbow. Unfortuanately, his is fight now and has the camera with the fish pictures. I´ll have to add them to the next blog for all of you that vicariously fishing with Matt. The nice thing about a tourist town is that while Matt is fishing there are actually things for me to do. The town is full of coffee shops, book stores that have books in English!, and great trails along the lake for running. I really cant complain about anything!
Yesterday we took a bus/boat tour to the Perito Moreno glacier. We were a little concerned because it was costing a little bit more than we wanted to spend, however, after our visit we both had to admit that it was money well spent. The glacier was amazing! We got really lucky with the weather. It was sunny, about 65 degrees, and no wind (it is always windy in Patagonia!). We talked to a couple people who went the day before and only say
a couple of small pieces break off the glacier into the lake. We saw a few HUGE pieces of ice break off while we were there. For the first hour or so we walked down the boardwalk to the lookout point where we saw about 20 or so smaller pieces fall into the lake and a couple of HUGE chunks. I´m talking about chunks of ice that are 2 or 3 times bigger than an average house. It was awesome!
After that we took an hour boat ride at the edge of the glacier. As soon as we got on the boat and starting driving toward the glacier we were able to watch another huge piece fall into the water. We got pretty close to the glacier and we able to take some great pictures. While we were pretty close another really big piece fell into the water. It was so big that the boat we were on was rocking pertty hard. It was really impressive to watch the glacier! Defiantely a unique experience!
Matt´s out fishing again today. Hopefully he gets picked up so he doesn´t have to walk 40km again. It is his last day of
More Glacier. .. . .
The ring in the water next to the glacier is from a HUGE piece of ice that fell off. It was about 5 times bigger than a bus. . .. BIG ICE! fishing until we get to Rio Grande because we will be in Chile for the next week or so. I´m off to grab a coffee and buy new books for the trip!
