So this spontaneous weekend started the day before, on Friday. As usual the TA's and I went to The Old Junk which is a bar not too far away where 2 of the TA's perform live music which is awesome. On the way there Ali and I met Bryan and Yolanda, a business man and his Chinese girlfriend and we invited them with us to the bar... There we had some drinks with them and found out that they were also bound to Guangzhou the next day for some business. We decided to meet up with them the next night to go out and party.

On our itinerary we had several objectives: Shamian Island, Qingping animal market, shopping at Beijing Lu, Ikea, and clubbing. However, half of our first day was spent trying to find our way around this monster of a city (3rd largest in China). Luckily for us, the MTR is bilingual and that made it a lot easier for us to get around. With our limited vocabulary in Chinese we were definitely able to get around, bargain, and ask for directions! So yay for Chinese lessons!

At Qingping market they sold everything from spices and herbs to a million different animals! you will all be pleased to know that all dogs were for sale as PETS and not dinner! :-) The puppies there were adorable!! I bargained the seller down to 100RMB (14USD), quite a bargain! Other than that they sold hamsters, rabbits, chinchillas, ducklings, chipmunks, and fish as pets too. They had a huge selection of tropical and non-tropical fish!

And in the food category they sold fowl, and snakes, and hundreds of scorpions in tubs... a bazillion different types of turtles, cats, etc!

Check out the pix!!

Then all the pics from the ally ways are from Shamian Island which almost looked like a little dutch town from the one side, with pretty bridges, and cobble stone streets and a boulevard of huge trees!

It took us ages to try and figure out where our hotel was, and it turned out it wasn't where we thought it would be. But luckily again we randomly ran into an American businessman at McDonald's and he had a personal translator who called the hotel and wrote down the directions in Chinese so we could get there by cab...

Beijing Lu is this bustling shopping street were you can find really good deals on all clothes and accessories so I got Converse shoes, a cap, wristband, and some other cool stuff!

That night we met up with Bryan and his girl who treated us out for the night... met them up at their 5 star hotel, had some drinks, then headed out to a really fancy Guangdong seafood restaurant were you went in (see pix of aquariums) and order any type of meat from fish to snakes to turtles to squid to shell fish and oysters to crabs and shrimp and lobster. All in all a feast if you like seafood which I don't... Tried some interesting stuff though😊

Then we headed out to a thumping club called Baby Face and stayed there till 4 in the morning!

The next day we continued our shopping spree and Beijing Lu again, then Ikea and finally very tired headed back home to Zhuhai!

I hope you are all doing well!!

This weekend I'm going to Shenzhen and will give you all the details when I get back!!

Lots of love,
me
