Itaipu DamItaipu DamItaipu Dam

This is the Itaipu dam, constructed and operated jointly by Paraguay and Brazil.
Well, we finally have time, internet, and a computer with USB and a DVD drive all at the same time! Today we saw the largest hydro electric dam in the world, the Itaipu dam on the Parana river, hundreds of exotic birds at a santuary and the Iguazu falls from the Brazilian side. It was a busy day.

The Itaipu dam was amazing, the pictures do not convey the size of the dam. The power generation capacity of the dam is 14,000 MW and it supplies 95% of the power for Paraguay (about 7 million people) and 20% of the power used by Brazil (190 million people). Compare this with Ontario (population of about 13 million), which uses over 25,000 MW at its peak demand.

The falls were amazing from the Brazilian side and tomorrow we will view the falls again from Argentina.
There is between 150 and 275 waterfalls in Iguazu depending on the time of year and water flow conditions, and the falls cannot be completely viewed all together.
