Mommy!
This is mom eating dinner shortly after she arived. Doesn't she look great! You would never guess that she just spent 17 hours traveling. Wednesday (October 24) I got out of class officially at 1:30, but I told my teacher that my mom was coming in so I got to leave 15 minutes early. Yay!!!! I ran home and tried to make the apartment look livable (I didn’t mess it up, it really wasn’t me), then I took my laptop and sat out in front of my apartment waiting for mom to arrive.
Moms plane was supposed to get in at 2:10, and she was going to take a taxi to my place, but I had to be there to pay for it cause mom didn’t have any forint. Less than five minutes after the battery on my laptop died, moms taxi pulled up.
It was really great seeing mom. After all this time living in a foreign country without seeing anyone I know from home for months, seeing mom was amazing. And she brought food. Mom had packed almost an entire suitcase full of goodies for us. Fun things that we cannot get in Hungary such as tomato soup and refried beans, even peanut butter. I cannot wait to get back home to start eating them. After mom had unpacked for awhile Mom, Paige,
Statues Brother
Mom and I happened to find my statues brother when we were at the mall. Actually, his entire family was there. It was touching. Stacey and I headed out to visit Sara, the woman I babysit for. Mom had brought a laptop for her and I wanted mom to meet the girls, so we headed out. The girls LOVED all the attention Paige, Stacey and I were giving them, it was better than one on one, and all the more people to hide for an extreme game of hide and go seek. Sara made us all some homemade tea, and mom gave her the laptop. Great fun was had by all.
After Sara’s we headed out to find dinner. I had gotten some suggestions for places to eat, but since I’m blonde I got the locations mixed up and we ended up at the wrong place so we just explored a little and found a random pub to eat at. Dinner was yummy.
Thursday Mom attended class with me. I had a midterm in Hungarian and a lecture in Roma. Mom liked the Roma teacher and said that the Hungarian class was too much for her, something about not understanding the language or something. The third class of the day was my art class, but we had a field trip to the House of
Coffee $$$
This is mom enjoying her cup of coffee. She said it was good. Terror. It was interesting going again, especially with my professor along. Hedi (the professor) was able to explain different things that I hadn’t seen or understood the first time through. Maybe mom will say something about here experience later? (Oh, hey mom!)
For dinner we went down the street to The Spare Key. Mom had Goulas. She said it was good. I agree.
Friday morning we took public transportation to the airport for our flight to Prague. We arrived in Prague around noon after an uneventful flight (that I slept through). While in Prague we stayed at the Marriott hotel, which was amazing. Mom had Super Cool Special Person Points or something and was able to use them to get us the room for free. This was very very nice after the way I have been living for so long. It is really constantly stressful to live in another country that you are not accustom to and staying at the Marriott is like a much needed break from this. It felt/feels like my birthday.
After we settled into the room we went down to the front desk to inquire about a city tour, to get a “lay of the land”
Hot Chocolate $$$
This is me enjoying my hot chocolate. It was soooo good. It was a great way to pass the time until our tour began. (Mom, everyday). There was a tour leaving in about an hour so we signed up for it and headed out. To kill time we went and got over priced drinks at a café on a busy walking street. The hot chocolate was delicious.
The tour itself was not exactly marvelous and didn’t really give us that great a ‘lay of the land’ but it did take us through the castle and the Jewish district, which was quite nice.
For the castle we just walked around the courtyards and into the cathedral, which was amazing. I actually remembered different things about this very cathedral from my high school sophomore History of Christian Art class. I hated the class, but I liked the cathedral. It was difficult taking pictures indoors and having them turn out, but take my word for it, this cathedral was really cool.
The tour ended at the top of the clock tower in the Old Town Square with a brilliant view of the city. It is strange seeing all these different European cities from towers and such, they all look so different even from above. Prague really does seem to be the city of 100 spires (more than
Welsome to Prague
This bus was there to greet us when we landed in Prague. Aren't they nice? 100 really).
After the tour mom and I walked around a little then headed back to the hotel. We upgraded our room so we got free breakfast and appetizers every day, so we just had appetizers for dinner. They were delicious. After dinner we headed to bed to prepare for the next day.
Day two in Prague mom and I headed back towards the Old Town Square and then across the Charles Bridge. Mom had read in a book about Prague that the bridge was always crowded but I kind of figured that since we were really not in the tourist season it wouldn’t be that bad. And it wasn’t bad. But it sure wasn’t empty either. I cannot imagine what Prague must be like during the tourist season if this is the off season, it would be unbearable.
We took our time walking across the bridge and looking at all the different people who had things set up, checked out the statues and just generally enjoyed the view. When we crossed back across the bridge we climbed up the tower (it cost like 3 euro for both of us), which was totally worth it, the view was really cool.
Museum
This is the giant museum at the end of the giant shopping street. The picture is crooked. Oh well! You could see all the little people flocking across the bridge and from the top we could even hear some of the performers down on the bridge below us.
After the bridge we went to a random restaurant that we passed that had a special of Czech goulash. This is a very different kind of goulash than you will find in the great city of Budapest. It was quite good, but I will always remain faithful to my Hungarian Goulas, which honestly was better. But they are different so I shouldn’t compare.
After lunch mom and I went into a variety of different shops around the Old Town Square. We basically just walked aimlessly exploring and enjoying being in a new and exciting city. There were tons and tons of stores selling bohemian crystals and glass that was fun to look at but frightening to walk around. I was convinced I was going to turn around and knock over a display of a million dollars worth of bohemian crystals.
The next day mom and I had a half-day to explore so we headed for the national museum at the end of a great big street. It was entertaining walking along
Building
This is a building in Prague. Yay! this street and checking out the different, pricier, shops. Upon reaching the museum we evaluated our allotted time and figured we would rather go back to the old Jewish Quarters to look around again, so off we went.
After touring around the Jewish district we ate lunch at a little place looking out on the Old Town Square where some sort of military ceremony was taking place. After lunch we went out to see what was going on. When we arrived there were four ladies on stage dressed in fur shawls singing random songs. It was VERY entertaining. After we grew tired of this we headed for the hotel so we wouldn’t miss our flight.
It was a good thing we left when we did because the lines at the Prague airport are insane!
I really enjoyed Prague a lot, and being there with mom was even better. It will be interesting to go again next weekend with my class, I’ll fill you all in on the differences then.
