Teatro de Colon
The guys on our first trip to the teatro looking a bit disappointed that
a) it was 'shut'
b) it wasnt very impressive.
(from left: Lisa, Kaushal, Katie, Sarah, Alice, Mandy and Paul) Fridays asado was rained off, the weather had been so hot for that week it had to break. We all gathered inside, with Will and Leo (one of Garys friends) playing the guitar, Leo is so amazing at it, incredible to listen to. It was so cool, sitting there with the rain lashing down, the thunder and lightening, with an Argentine strumming along, playing latino music, whilst everyone sang along in spanish. Eventually the rain stopped and we went out to a bar called Mi Loca, then Leo took us to a club called Mint, managing to get us in for free. Due to the copious amounts of alcohol previously consumed, I went a bit dance happy: at one point attempting to pole dance with a 2 foot pole. Not quite as humiliating as the time I tried to pole dance with a 2 foot wide pillar. Will and this American girl kept on wandering off, so it was generally me, Leo, and these two Spanish guys, Pablo and Agi, absolutely mad, but lovely lovely guys. My drunken spanish is definitely improving! Of course woke up the next morning with hideous hangover that lasted the ENTIRE day. None too pleased about that, but can only blame myself. We went to Recoleta market again, bought a few typically Argentinan things...some of them prezzies, so not going to divulge! Had lunch in the wonderful Buller, then on the Saturday night we managed the asado, 10 kilos of meat this time! It was done to perfection, some of it so rare it was still mooing. Loved it! The girls were going out on the town, but Erin was ill and I was knackered beyond belief, so i gave it a miss.
Trogged out on Sunday by myself to go do a tour of the Teatro de Colon again, but yet again it was shut. Or so I thought. Turns out the entrance is round the side. Ah well third time lucky next time i go! Got chatting to an American and Australian who were taking pics, gave them some advice on what to do in BA! Ha! I can give informed advice! So hot now, cant believe its only just spring - its going to be unbearable in summer, good thing im leaving the city when it starts to reach boiling point. Came home and met up with Lisa, we went and read our books in the park. It was absolutely packed, still full of hundreds of people even at 6pm. We stopped off on the way home to get ice cream at a new place called Volta....simply divine. Pretty much the same standard as Freddos, but i can never get over the value. A wafer basket filled with two scoops of any flavour ice cream, topped with as many toppings as you can fit on. I had banana split and chocolate with almonds, topped with peaches, strawberries, chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce, and lumps of brownie. All for about 1 pound 50. I know ive probably ranted about Freddos before, but the ice cream experience here is really out of this world! Im gonna come back such a heifer.
Monday was a typical day at school, then I took Erin with me to El Pilar. I taught one girl there who didnt learn English at school. Had to start at the VERY beginning, wrote out the alphabet, and taught her what each letter sounded like. I found myself sounding like a complete fool, sitting there repeating 'zed. zed. zed.' for about 10 minutes. Great lesson though, loads of fun. Tuesday at the hospital we had a light hearted chat about euthanasia, before moving onto travel plans. I made an effort with Maria that night, I actually wrote down grammar rules i'd got from the internet about using 'at, in, and on' as prepositions with time and place. I think she understood, but then of course I ended up getting confused. Its funny, the more you think about your own language, the more utterly bewildering it seems. All us volunteers have said that you end up questioning yourself; phrases and words sound wrong, and you end up in a big grammatical mess, with shocking english. Mark arrived Tuesday night, and it was Lisas last night, so we cracked open a few bottles of wine and had a nice night in. Bit of a teary farewell Wednesday morn, im going to really miss Lisa; since we came together and have been through it all together, part of me thinks I should be going back with her! Making an effort to banish the homesickness this week. After all, ive only got another 2 weeks left, then im off on my adventures!
Had my last wednesday at school, it was fun, then I went out with Andy to do a bit of shopping. Got chatting to a nice assistant called Pablo in one shop while Andy was trying stuff on, and - i swear to god - he said, 'so are you from Spain then?' I could have kissed him, i was so astounded. I was like, no, im from England, and he said 'oh, well you have a Spanish accent' Ha!!!!! I have a Spanish accent! Someone actually thought i was Spanish and not a foreigner speaking spanish!!!!! woo hoo!! this means a lot to me by the way, hence all the exclamation marks. So that pretty much made my day...or so i thought. My whole week was made when i returned home to a HUGE bunch of lillies from a certain boyfriend, sent to cheer me up because ive been a bit down with homesickness. Had some drinks then went to Grants, where, inspired by my run of great luck, I tried to beat my previous 5 course record. Beat it? I smashed it! By two whole courses! Sushi, followed by seafood, followed by salad and cold meats, followed by steak, followed by more sushi, followed by fruits and jelly, followed by crepe and ice cream. We were all literally bursting, copied Erins idea and had some hot water to help everything move along. Or at least disperse. Went to bed feeling full but happy 😊
By the way ive been updating pics on previous entries having got my hands on other peoples digital pics, so take a look sometime!
Thursday night drank a bottle of wine, met a couple of medical engineers from the north, Pablo and Joaquin (tipsily told him i loved his name) Pablo told me i had a spanish accent!!! oh my god! 2nd time in two days! At the moment Chloe is sitting next to me waiting for her name to be mentioned. Am bit drunk so gonna call it a night. Chao chicos, besos xxxx
