It did not take long for Dan and I to decide to get married. Cliff had to make a quick trip to the Australian consulate in the great pollutionopolis Guanzhou for essential paperwork, and made faces at some poor child in the train on the way home. We attended at the Shenzhen Civil Affairs Bureau on 17 September 2007. We dressed nicely and performed the ceremony in Chinese, photographed and videoed by the in-house providers. It was dignified, and as you can see, culminated in parading our marriage licences in front of the crest of the People's Republic! It was reminiscent for Dan of her parent's own marriage, in which they were photographed holding up photos of Chairman Mao in a similar pose. After the ceremony, we had a nice lunch, went to practice our waltz steps in Lizhi Park, where we encountered other interesting park users and had a nice dinner. However, for dessert, we ended up in a small bakery near home, where we had an impromptu wedding cake! All this, however, was the civil marriage, and we did not exchange our rings. Our spiritual/community marriage will be with a small number of family and friends in November.
