Today Kim and I drove from Las Vegas, NV to Sedona, AZ to begin our 2007 Fall vacation. As we drove over Hoover Dam we noticed that the Hoover Dam bypass has made some progress. The new route will be quite a distance above the Hoover Dam as you can see by the pictures Kim took as we drove over Hoover Dam.

The drive from Las Vegas to Flagstaff was pretty uneventful. Not too much traffic and great weather. The route to Sedona (SR 89A) is a beautiful drive. Many pine trees, lots of grass, wildflowers and shady areas on the road. After living in Las Vegas so long....it was weird to see so much greenery, weeds and trees. As you descend into the beautiful canyon....the next thing you know....there are red rocks and mountains everywhere.

We found our hotel with no problem, then set out to see some sights. After such a long drive, we decided to stay close to our hotel and do some shopping. We visited the Art Mart which is a big shopping area filled with individual artist's booths. They had everything for sale under one roof; jewelry, paintings, pottery and photography.

Doesn't look like the bypass will be done anytime soon.
We also went to Tlaquepaque which is an arts and crafts shopping village set up to look like a Mexican village complete with courtyards, fountains and sculptures. There was so much to see, including wonderful art galleries and exclusive shops. Kim and I found a sculpture that we liked but it was a little out of our price range at $4000....besides we didn't have room in the back of the car to bring it back home to Las Vegas. LOL !

There is a funny story (at least NOW it's funny) about the back patio of our hotel room. The door leading out to our patio had a key reader/door lock on it....so Kim and I went to sit out and watch the sunset, relax and enjoy the breeze. We brought our door key with us to get back in after we'd relaxed. Little did we know that the door lock/key reader DIDN'T work with our door key provided to our room. So we thought we'd just walk around to the front door of our hotel room.....however Kim had put the door latch across it....so we were locked out of our room. We had to have the front desk call the owner of the hotel so he could get a master key to open our patio door. Not a good way to start the week huh? Other than that....we are on vacation and LOVING IT!
