Full Moon Party, Ko Phangan

View from Utopia Resort, Koh PhanganView from Utopia Resort, Koh PhanganView from Utopia Resort, Koh Phangan

As evidence to the huge hills we had to get up, we were rewarded by this awesome view of the bays from our tree house balcony.
After landing in Bangkok and meeting up with Kym (YAY!) we headed down for a night on Ko Samui and then to Ko Pha Ngan for the purpose of this little island getaway.. Full Moon Party!..
After a night in a Ko Samui bungulow under the flightpath of all planes heading to the island (the palm trees by the pool shook as planes flew overhead about every hour - on the half and quarter hour if we were lucky!) we were ready for a big night out fuelling ourselves with homemade vanilla and redskin vodkas from the balcony of our tree house villa!
Full moon party attracts about 15-20,000 people (largely the israeli, italian and french community!- and they all know how to party!) is set on Had Rin, a stretch of the southern coast and dotted with bars and nighclubs all belting out different genres of music to suit all tastes!.. there are stalls set up every 10m or so that sell the most toxic combinations in what is called 'buckets'.. consisting of whatever spirit you wanted, but redbull & vodka being the favourite!.. there are the famous mushroom milkshakes that can be purchased from the many levelled, timber built

Just like that ad screened in Oz, where the kid starts screaming from fright after the parents had not researched their travel desinations.. Our stretch of beach was just like that!.. .. btw.. the outdoor, Ko Samui airport is awesome!.. just like that out of a James Bond film..!
bar on the rocky outcrops on one far end of the beach.... here you must take off your shoes and sit cross legged on plush cushions or you simply look out of place! The beach has many skilled flametwirlers and some not so skilled that you have to watch out for.. as well as many tacky UV tattoo stands where you can be painted and glow for the rest of the night... (yes, me and kym both gave in! hee hee..). We had an awesome night, meeting heaps of people, walking (and tripping up) the stretch of beach, running into other travellers that I had met in Cambodia, also completing their SE Asia loop with a big party!
On Ko Pha Ngan, we picked a location a little more tranquil than our flight path of Ko Samui although the hills of this Island took a beating on us, hiring a couple of motos between the three of us (me, kym and owen - dude i met in Cambodia) and headed off for a scoot around the island and kym getting her exercise by jumping off a running up a couple of hills the motos weren't going to make!

This Thai guy was the best and fastest firetwirler on the beach.. just in the space of the flash you can see how many time that thing was flung round!.. far more impressive than the confident Aussie that had had one to many buckets!
Ko Samui for a couple of days - and once we discovered the infamous Chaweng (must be pronounced.. CCCHHHAAA ---- WWWEEEEENNNNGGGGG!!!!.... with a pelvic thrust!) it was evident once again that the israelis, italians and french owned this island.. well the clubs of it anyway!..most of the main clubs were located in a culdesac off the main stretch of beach and shops (which during the day is jam packed full of very wrong... european style swimsuits on the men!) pumping out yet again all genres of music!.. As the clubs close at 2pm.. everyone heads to the only club/bar open that looks more like the backyard of a house.
We had a great time on the Islands and wanted to just chill on the beaches for many more days.. but the shops and the 4 * hotel we were booked into in Bangkok were calling us!... as well as the room service for Kym!

Looks idylic.. warm, shallow water, almost white sands, but dont go swimming in some sections as you'll come out covered in a green algal film!.. looked good on kym though! ;-)

These are the buckets.. during the day.. they don't seem to look so inviting or intriguing after a couple the night before.. none the less .. a great initiative!
