From New York we made our way up into North Pennsylvania, and ended up staying the night at a camp site in Mansfield. Little did we realize that we had happened upon none other than “Bucktail’s Family Fun Park”, with a working antique carousel, mini trains, cable ride, fishing ponds and a really cool mini golf course (Tom didn’t seem to be too interested in that to start with, but I talked him around and he ended up really enjoying it - probably because I let him win!). Slightly bizarre was the signed guitar and poster of The Bloodhound Gang in the children’s games room though…

Another night, another camp site - this time in North West New York, at the Four Mile Creek camp ground, with spectacular sunset views over Lake Ontario to Toronto. (Interesting factlet - Lake Ontario is about 6000 years old, and is one of the five great lakes that together contain about 20% of the world’s fresh water). We woke up the next morning to a grey and drizzly day - this was the first time that we had to pack away the camping gear in the rain.

From here it was a short drive to Niagara Falls on 9th September, where we had arranged to meet our good friends from Motivation, Stefan and Sharmini. They braved the drizzly drive from their home in Canada (we had planned to visit them there, but due to restrictions on my visa that wasn’t possible so they very kindly came over to see us instead). It was great to catch up with them and their two children, since we last saw each other in Sri Lanka nearly four months ago (seems like yesterday, seems like four years ago!) Niagara Falls itself is quite stunning, but due to the weather we limited our visit to the top of the falls and the restaurant. If it had been really hot then no doubt a trip on “Maid of the Mist” would have been very welcome, but as it was none of us felt like getting any wetter than we already were. We said a sad farewell to our friends and headed west - realizing that this actually marked the turning point in our journey. From now onwards, we would be heading home.
