Continuing east, we headed through Madison County in Iowa (of “Bridges of Madison County” fame) and came across the small town of Winterset, which happens to be the birthplace of John Wayne. No time to tour the house, but we stopped to get a few pictures. A couple of days later we made a slight detour to our route at the recommendation of friends, and spent a full day in Hannibal, childhood home of Mark Twain (author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn). I have to admit that I have never read any of his works, but Mark Twain is probably America’s most famous author and the visit brought back lots of childhood memories for Tom. A highlight of the stay was an evening dinner cruise on the Mark Twain riverboat, taking in views of the great Mississippi river, which brought back memories for me of Mum and Dad participating in the local operatic society production of Showboat.
