On Sunday, we went back to Heather’s church in Incheon. If you think American church can be boring and hard to follow, try a Korean church where you don’t understand a word being mentioned. It was pretty hard sitting there for an hour not understanding anything. I did meet some cute kids that came up to me and starting asking questions in English.
After church, we headed to a nearby to another galbi-style restaurant with Heather’s mom and Heather’s friend (Eu-dim). At this place, we sat on cushions on the floor; we had been waiting for this experience for a while now. The food was, of course, really delicious. I am so in love with Korean food! I really like the sharing concept. Koreans usually order one big dish or many different dishes and share with one another; it’s really awesome because you get to try everything.
After lunch, we headed back over to Seoul to get tickets for a show later that night. After we finally found the theatre and got the tickets, we headed down the hill and along “the wall” to the Deoksugung Palace. It wasn’t anything impressive, but it was quite a modern palace that
had carpet and electric lighting in some buildings. We just sort of relaxed there for a while. We then walked along the plaza of City Hall where kids were enjoying water fountains. We then headed into the very expensive Lotte Department Store where we could do nothing but browse around.
We then headed back to the theatre where we met back up with Celestia and watched the amazing Korean production of Nanta. It was actually quite amazing, and we even had second row seats...sweet! It was a mix of traditional Korean song and dance with the American show Stomp with the kitchen (Koreans love to eat). The used stuff found in the kitchen to make some really awesome music.
During one part of the show, they couldn’t decide if their soup was good or not so they decided to let the audience try it out. They came and picked two from the audience. Charity and I were talking earlier that it would be so cool to be picked for the show. The woman on our side looked at straight at me and passed by; we were so disappointed. Then, here she comes back and picks me to get
up there, and they even dress me up in traditional Korean clothes! They had me and a Korean girl eat the soup while they tried chasing a fly. I guess the fly landed on me because they snuck up to me and smacked me on the head. I was actually a bit nervous because I was eating this really good potatoe soup, but I was afraid I had the stuff all over my mouth with all those people looking straight at me. Little did we know, the clothes we were wearing are traditional Korean wedding clothes so we had a little wedding and got married. Mom, I hope your proud.
Charity even got picked for the dumpling-making contest, which is totally awesome because we had been talking all week how her favorite Korea food is the dumpling. Our side didn’t win, but I think she really enjoyed it anyway.
They ended the show with a grand finale of traditional Korean drums. It was simply amazing! They also did a traditional farm dance with long ribbons on their hats. They turned on the fluorescent lights and let the ribbons shine; it was so beautiful! The drums, though, were so
thunderous; amazing is the only word that I can use to describe it.
After the show, we headed to the Seoul South Gate, probably one of the most recognizable landmarks in Korea. We took some pictures, and headed to dinner at a Shabu Shabu restaurant. The food was so good! They cooked the food at our table in a big bowl full of broth and soup; everything prepared was so delicious, and they kept bringing out more food. We ended the meal and our weekend in Seoul with an ice & ice cream treat filled with all sorts of fruits and cream. Very delicious! Now, time to head back to camp.
