Man vs Machine...
It looks pretty straight-forward, doesnt it? A sink and a washer- nothing fancy, right? Think again... Monday, July 16, 2007
Quick update on the happenings of the past few days:
Friday was Laundry Day for me, the first in our new place, so there was some experimentation trying to figure out how our washer works. You would think it would be simple, but you would be wrong… Apparently, ours is hooked up backwards, so when you set it to cold, you get hot water, and vice versa. It also appears that it doesn’t matter what setting its on when it comes to the rinse cycle- you get hot water, regardless. Maybe that’s true on all washers?? Anyway, I was hard at work by 10am, trying to get everything through the washer so that I could get it out on our clothesline (No, we don’t have a dryer) during the brief sun exposure our yard gets- currently about 4 hours between 10am and 2p. Being that it was freezing cold outside, I knew that the only way the clothes were going to dry was to be in the sun as much as possible. Fighting off hypothermia in my fingers as I hung up wet clothes in freezing temperatures, I got it all up right when
The Dryer...
I got my clothes out on the line just as the sun hit... the sun hit, optimistic that 4 hours of sun would dry everything but my jeans… All this to say that I found myself hauling all of my semi-dry clothes to the laundromat at about 5pm. 10 minutes in the dryer did the trick, and thankfully, the laundry adventure was over…
Job update: We got the positions at the Sofitel-Queenstown, and are set to start working next week. We were a little nervous when we didn’t hear back from the Food/Beverage Manager right away, but it sounds like everything worked out. Cory starts on Monday, and I start on Wednesday. They didn’t want 2 new people training at the same time, so for the first couple of weeks, we wont be working together very much. But, after we learn the ropes, she said she would do her best to get us similar shifts so that we would have the same days off. Sounds like about 20-25 hours over 4 days/week, which is ideal. We’ll see how it all works out- just thankful to have found something.
Along those lines, I’ve actually been working the past four nights at this restaurant called Luciano’s, which is downtown on the Steamer Wharf.
Dry you buggers!!
So, 5 hours later, I still found myself headed to the laundromat for some bonus lundry time... How exciting! Cory and I had dropped off our resumes there last weekend, and apparently they were having some issues with one of their staff, so they called me up to see if I could come in and help out. Not wanting to burn any bridges before we figure this Sofitel thing out, I said sure. So, Friday night, I was on staff at Luciano’s, cleaning glasses, serving drinks, setting tables, etc.- just helping out really. It’s a great place- kind of a mobster-esque vibe to it (The owners named it after Lucky Luciano)- they have Tommy Guns and quotes from gangster movies painted on all of the walls, Dean Matin and Sinatra crooning in the background. The staff is great- very friendly and helpful to “The New Kid”, as I am currently affectionately known… I actually went out with all of them on Saturday night for one of the waitresses’ birthday party- it was good to get out on the town to some new places, meet some new people, etc. The birthday girl's boyfriend is the manager at this cool little place called Mini-Bar. They had a cake, party hats, free drinks, pumping hip-hop music- quite a scene. We stayed there
Welcome to Our Humble Abode...
1/46 Gorge Rd., Queenstown, New Zealand. There's Cory, coming home from work! for awhile before hitting up a couple of other places- Bardeaux and Barcelona- before heading back to Mini-Bar for more cake. Definitley more of a resident crowd as opposed to the tourist crowds at some of the other bars. Im actually starting to feel like a local in Queenstown, which is pretty cool… Anyway, Clarissa, who is the manager and half-owner of Luciano's, is from Western Sydney, and is in to these ridiculously long cross-country races… She’s about to start training for one that’s something like 60 kilometers, up and over a mountain range?? Crazy… She is very cool, hilarious, and absolutley LOVES her restaurant- which seems to be pretty standard at Luciano’s. Anyway, its been a great experience, and Im glad to have been able to get in a few shifts before starting at the Sofitel, just in case that doesn’t work out and I want to do something else. Working at Luciano’s would really be an ideal situation for me- only open for dinner, closed by 11p at the latest, cool people, great environment- the problem would be getting enough hours. We’ll see how it works out. For now, Im just glad to have some sort of income…
Come on in...
Let me show you around... And now, a tour of our place… It may not look like much, but believe me when I say that we were EXTREMELY fortunate to get it. Enjoy the tour!
