While the Blog Master sleeps, I must, as the driver that day, get the first word in about "The Short Cut."
First of all, any reasonable navigator would look at the current AAA map of Idaho/Montana and find a mostly (95%) paved Forest Service Road # 206 running from Indian Valley Idaho to Cascade Idaho. And yes I did utter those famous last word, "This short cut should save us at least an hour." We all laughed.
Second, when the pavement ended we presumed it was the short gravel section shown on the map. When the gravel continued we pondered a turn-around, briefly.
Third, we saw part of Idaho usually only enjoyed by hunters, prospectors, and gap-toothed poachers.
Fourth, our four-hour 50 mile short cut gave the van a great test. We climbed over 4,000' on that short cut. We've named him "Lurch" due to his top heavy overloaded nature. He passed the test.
Fifth, Forest Service Road 206 is neither paved nor does it terminate on it's East end in Cascade Idaho. Some AAA cartographer needs to hear from us!
Finally, we got the adventure on early!
We're an hour out of Yellowstone National Park this morning. Stay tuned.

MapQuest?
Sounds like your cartographer came to AAA from MapQuest. Either that or he/she has a well developed sense of humor... MH

Rockhound rights!
Hey Hucks, how dare you say that that portion of rock-strewn reality is known only to prospectors, hunters and other unworthies? No doubt there were many subtle signs of rockhound infestation along that stretch, like funny small mounds of turned earth, odd maps drawn into the sandstone, and secret rockhound messages such as boots turned upside-down on fence posts. I see I have much work to do with you flatlanders. White Mountains or bust!

Laughed till it hurt !
Why didn't you tell us that The Driver can write so well !! We laughed so hard over your Shortcut comments. Keep it up !! Better luck navigating, dear ones. Do you get regular E-mails? It's getting really hot here, but you've got us beat. Don't light matches! People start whining if it gets over 75*, thanks to Straits breeze, it's perfect. Luv from the San Juan two.

Lurch!
Coming up with a name for your transportation is a very good omen! All good adventures have a ship/vehicle with a name. Yayy!
