Hello from Latacunga(2800m) which is a City at the base of Cotopaxi Volcano (5897m). We are staying at a beautiful Hacienda but even with the fireplace going and the electric heater, several layers of clothes and three Alpaca blankets, Steffi said she was too cold. Dang! I thought I´d get the kids heated up by doing the 1.5 k hike out from the Hacienda to the hwy and there we flagged down an express bus. The ride took about an hour and cost us $0.50 cents each. Getouttahere!!!! Then we grabbed a taxi for $1.50 to the central plaza and almost right away found a small store loaded with handknit goods. We tore through the piles and each got a thickly knit sweater for $10 US a pop. Happy shoppers, needless to say.
Meanwhile, Fernando worked his usual verbal skills and convinced a local TOUR operator into giving us a good deal on a tour. It boils down to them coming for us tomorrow morning at 9:00 am and taking us up Cotopaxi to the glacier !! where we will hike until our lungs burst, have a picnic somwhere and see a laguna somewhere and then they will
drive us back to the lodge. This is a full day tour and includes transportation, food, guide and entrance into the Cotopaxi National park for $35 US per person. It should be quite a day! The ice man cometh...
