After 6 nights in Canada, we headed to New York for 3 nights, and the first thing we noticed was just how different a place it is in the summer than the winter. We were last here in December, in what is supposed to be one of the busiest tourist weeks of the year (with Christmas shopping and all) but we'd never once seen the streets even half as busy as this that whole week. Central Park and Union Square were teeming with people (Union Square was so crammed that Neil didn't even recognise it as somewhere we'd been before), traffic at 11 o'clock on a Saturday night as was as busy as rush hour, and the queues for the Magnolia Bakery were a couple of blocks long every time we passed (we just walked straight up to the counter in December). It wasn't just our imagination either, the therapist at the spa I visited (thank you Paul and Marty!!) commented that I would be sure to notice the difference between my two visits as New Yorkers apparently go out as little as possible in the winter.

As we'd seen all the sights so recently, we had a great time just hanging out round Chelsea (where we stayed), the Meatpacking District, the Village and the Lower East Side, where we enjoyed tea with Mike Myers one afternoon. Well, when I say "with", I mean that he was in the same tea shop, but just a table away. Laura, you will be delighted to hear that I got Neil to do his Dr Evil impression for him, which he just loved. Ok, again, that's not true, but if that tea shop had have been a bar, you so know I would have. (Just reading over this, "tea shop" sounds a bit Miss Marple, but I promise it is actually quite a cool place.) Anyway, we actually only ventured north of Chelsea once during our stay - on the Sunday to spend the afternoon in Central Park, which was just gorgeous.

Next stop on the itinerary is San Francisco, where I am writing this, so that's us nearly up to date! I will see if i can persuade Neil to say a few words next time...
