Lots of scenic views along the river meandering through Ljubljana
On from Vienna, we found ourselves in the alpine regions of Slovenia, though not before a lovely stop in its capital city, Ljubljana.

Ljubljana is quite a small city, it thinks its more of a town really. It is very scenic, and a great place for just wandering around. Not much in the way of sights, so we just soaked up the atmosphere. There is a small castle overlooking the old centre, which we decided to walk up to, instead of taking the funicular. It seemed like a good idea to get our legs ready for all the mountains we plan to climb.

The next day headed off to the lakeside village of Bled, where we planned to spend a few days. Bled proved to be as pretty and idyllic as we had heard. Over the next few days we staggered long walks, boat trips and mountain climbs. Lynda even surprised herself by going white water rafting! which turned out to be fantastic fun.

Leaving Bled we headed for Italy, on a small train through high mountain passes, and some very long tunnels. The town we wanted to cross the border into Italy from is very small,

and we were one of the few people on the train. The conductor was especially chilled out, more so after smoking some special herbs in the train loos!

It turned out to be quite a mission crossing the border in our chosen small town, as we found after being hauled off the bus that was to take us across the border. It turned out the crossing we wanted to use was only for EU citizens. We spent the next hour and a half carrying our heavy packs along the border fence, looking for a border crossing that would let us through. Eventually we did find some sucker to let us in, and we boarded the slowest train in the universe to Venice.

It was so relaxing having Ross row me around the lake, and he made it look so easy! I mean seriously, how hard can it be?
