Well, sad news from Puyo. Susan is heading home as I type this to go to her Great Aunt´s (Auntie´s) funeral. Auntie passed away yesterday morning. Sue is taking it rather hard and I know that it is better for her if she goes to the funeral. Because it is not immediate family, PC does not pay for the trip and she has to use vacation days to boot. It is not a big deal though and PC has been very understanding. Shé leaves Quito on Monday and returns late next Sunday. Auntie was by all means a grandmother to Susan and a fixture in her family. She reached the ripe old age of 99 and was still mentally sharp. A few bad falls did her in, the most recent one a few days ago. Our trip back in September was in part to go to Sue´s brother´s wedding, but also to celebrate Auntie´s 100th which would have been in mid September - we´ll celebrate it none-the-less though.

This morning, after a restless night of little sleep, Sue and I made some coffee, took our plastic chairs up on the roof of our apartment and looked out at the two volcanoes in the distance. Only the second time since we have been here that they have been visible. It was a glorious site to say the least. I am not a religious man, however, I am very spiritual and I can´t help but think that Auntie had something to do with the incredible morning we witnessed. As if she pushed aside the clouds just long enough for us to enjoy their beauty. In addition, this morning happened to by one of the most quiet one as well. We could here the birds chirping and the wind blowing - even the dogs and roosters seemed to be at ease. In some weird way, this was Auntie´s way of letting Sue know that all was ok in the world.

To all of you - have a great one.

Jeremy

Sincere Sympathy
Hey Jeremy! My deepest condolences. You are both in my thoughts and prayers. Sorry for your/her loss! We all know she's now in a better place. I hope Sue has a safe trip home and though the reason for her trip is a sad one, I hope that she gets to enjoy some of her time home too! Take care of yourself down there... God Bless you both. Con Amor, Allison

Hey Jer
Jer, I got to speak to Sus over the phone which was very nice, but I thought I would drop you a line over blog comment as well. I heard a lot about how everything was going and it sounds like you guys are doing well and really getting the experience of a lifetime. I too feel a great sadness over Auntie's passing even though I haven't been part of the family for very long. She was an awesome women and I hope we all age as gracefully. Anyway, hang in down there and we will see you in September!
