We have just spent a week in the most amazing place! El Calafate is our first stop in Argentina. We came here to see the glaciers.... and they are stunning! We stayed at America del Sur which is situated on a hill that overlooks Lago Argentina. We chilled out on the first day and explored the town. 2nd day we went to the Perito Moreno Glacier!! It is 30-60m high, 4km wide and 30km long!! Absolutely unbelievable! Although it is low season due to their winter the weather was great, chilly but fine... we went on a boat that went within a few hundred metres of the glacier.... It was huge and when chunks would crack and fall off it thundered! And being there in low season meant we only had about 20people there viewing it with us... Perfect!!
A couple of days later we went on a katamaran through the channels of Lago Argentina to visit some other glaciers! The Upsala is 60-80m high, 60km long &5-7km wide.... the Spegazzini was 80-135m high, 1.5km wide &25km long.... the mayo glacier is 34km2. We also went to see the Onelli (45km2), Bolado (16km2) & Agassiz (31km2) glaciers which flow into the
Onelli Lake, filling it with icebergs! That was extraordinary! We also kept an eye out for woodpeckers or wild cows that live in te forest we had to walk through to get it, but didn´t get to see them! But we did see plenty of other huge icebergs as we sailed along!
After the tours, our days in El Calafate have been a bit sleepy.... hot chocolate, reading heaps (everyone should read ´the kite runner´!) and visited the lagoon and bay of Lago Argentino. Actually... we saw flamingoes this afternoon!
Next stop... Buenos Aires....
