At the zoo. Ready to make an escape The people of Medellin smile at me with white smiles every day from behind a counter, down a supermarket aisle, at a table in a restaurant, passing in the street, or looking from the other side of the Metro platform. Beautiful people with perfect figures, and a wardrobe consisting only of figure flaunting outfits seem to see something special in us few blue eyed, pale skinned people that venture out into the publics view. Occasionaly someone will approach me and ask me where I am from, or complement me on looking the way that a common kiwi boy does.
Whistles and suggestive words ring from crowds outside bars as we conspicuously weave between the waves of turning heads, and then we seem to be set upon a stage in a spotlight as we try to dissolve into the dark energy of the dancefloor. It is both a compliment and a concern to attract such attention. On one hand I do find it mildly flattering that people far more beautiful then myself, choose to turn their heads on my account, but at the same time I wonder if I might be a candidate for a circus performing somewhere here in Colombia.

a2 It is Weird!
I find I have many questions to ask, but often lack either the confidence to ask them, or simply cannot find words that correspond to my curiosities on my only recently rolling spanish toungue. I walk on wondering as i wander past still more and more curious individuals that seem to reflect my own wonder, staring back into my own puzzled eyes. This is a place that i shall need to revisit with a greater wealth of spanish, and perhaps a little less self conciousness some day down the road.
As for now I find that I have spent a fair deal of time on the internet over the past few days now that my travelling possy has dispersed to different corners of the globe, and I find myself twittling my thumbs, and tapping myself on the shoulder for a little company. I turn my hope now to the good chance of meeting more wonderful people to travel with along way.
What 'way' is this?
Well...
I have finally bitten the bullet and organised an airline ticket to Leticia for Tuesday morning, and from that landbound Colombian city that is lost somewhere amongst the Amazon
El Penol
That is the staircase that we laboured up to find the view Rainforest I will endeavour to seek passage aboard a river boat down the Mighty Amazon River, and into the once magnificent Brazilian city of Manaus. The plans for my journey from that point are very clearly uncertain, and the only criteria for the remainder of my journey are that I need to see as many great things as possible before I push the buzzer at the door of Hostel Clan in Buenos Aires sometime in early August. I suspect much of my time will be spent within ear-shot of the Atlantic Ocean crashing onto white sandy beaches somewhere where they serve huge fresh fruit smoothies and rent surf boards, but I also would like to poke my head into a few cleverly crafted colonial buildings, and spot some wild creatures of the continent as I jump from one Brazilian beach to the next. So just maybe I will find some time to sneak inland to The Pantanal, and maybe stand before The Falls of Iguazu one last time before I roll down from the tropics and into a late winter chill on a latitude even to our own back home in the beautiful long islands of the whitest clouds.
Atop
looking out across Guatape from atop El Penol I have been sure not to waste my time here in Medellin.
I visited the water park that is set in a valley to the South of Medellin for the second time this week. It is a place where water slides are so steep that they tear open the seems of your shorts, and bruise your backside (I thought it to be strange that no one else seemed to be going on that near vertical slide, but the 10 strong crew of kids that had chosen me as their favourite gringo to follow around insisted it was the thing to do). It was great, but for the seem of my 5$ shorts, and the remainder of that fun filled day consisted of me running around with a generous amount of thigh showing. It may have contributed to people screaming out 'I love you' as I ran past, which was nice to hear, although I don't know that they were sincere, and I did suspect that perhaps it was one of the few things they knew how to say in english. I hope I can keep my shorts intact for the entire day at the water park tomorrow.
The Zoo.
Another One
As if I would come up with an original idea for a photo I visited the local zoo, which was good, and I had a close encounter with some squirrels, a turtle, and got some looks from a puma. The photos tell the story. I think I want to have a zoo at my house one day, or at least a few pets that need to be kept in an enclosure, and eat 20kgs of feed every day! That would be an unusual and interesting thing to point out to any friends you might have visiting...
"Over there is the bbq, and behind there, next to the swimming pool is the bengal tiger enclosure. Don't go in there!"
I also managed to escape for a day to that lovely lake district that you see in my photos, called 'Guatape'. It was beautiful, and I found the thousand step climb up a strange granite hill that stands amongst the lakes very rewarding with views that must rival those found at 111 Mitchell Street (give me Brooklyn any day!). It was Scotland, myself and a rather odd Israeli, whom seemed to become wierder and wierder as the day went on. Gave me and Colin somthing to laugh about tho.
I am ready to
Sexy Man
Blocking a beautiful view move on from this wonderful city at the heart of Colombia now, and discover more places to visit when I return, because I am sure now that the South America seed has been well and truely planted in my unsettled mind.
Write me a story, or send me a picture, because I only have two more days here in a place with fast internet, and then after that, Who Knows???
Adios,
Andrew
