Golden girl...
Nah, it's just Angela pretending again So Puerto Madry, with its plethera of imaginary animals we had to leave. We opted for the cheap-o bus to Buenos Airies, a mere 19 hours away. This meant no food or blankeys for us. Usually a little man comes along and tucks us in a shuts the curtains for us. Not this time. The bus was an hour late to start with. A further hour into the journey we stopped unexpectedly and would remain there for a further 5 hours. Hmmmm. Turned out the internal electrics had died and they were using a kind of car battery to charge them. We got a free feed out of it though. They all have their evening meal at 9 - 9:30 pm. This means that we´d already had ours but were happy to accept another. I was also thankful. I now realise that I´ve been stolen from in the last 4 countries I´ve been to - the car in NZ, the passport fiasco, and then going to take a bite from my sausage sandwhich I´d prepared lovingly for the journey, it turned out that someone had stolen the dog from this hotdog. Bah (someone later pilfered an entire sandwich in Uruguay
For Mama G...
Angela's furball post trim! - but that´s another story)
So, eventually arrived in B.A. (as its locally known) at 4 pm, and were starving not having stopped since the feed the night before. Argentinian steak called. 2 squid a portion with all the trimmings of course. I think that BA is my top city of all the cities I´ve been to! We went to the city cemetry which is full of mini temple like mausoleums and houses all of the great Argentinian´s from presidents, to poets, to military heroes and even Eva Peron rests here in a side alley surrounded by flowers and poems that people have brought to her final resting place. Because of a favourable exchange rate, it turns out that I can shop in boutiques that are like Harvey Nicks styleee with more assistants to shoppers, because that´s the way the rich like to shop. I bought stuff - and a lot of it.
On to the art galleries, cafes, musuems, obelisques. There are sooooo many. We were in town for the 25th May- which we think is their independence day. They seem to use this as an opportunity to riot. Standing in the main plaza, we might have
A statue most elegent...
Nah, tis just me pretending made it onto TV. We had a good nosey round their vans anyways. It also however, means that everything is shut. Hmmmm. We decided to follow the locals, which meant we were going to the zoo, zoo, zoo.
It brought out the animal activist in me! Argentinian zoos appear to be what British zoos were like, maybe 30 years ago. It was interesting to watch and see the whole of BA in this context, but was pretty horrible. Angela and myself had opted for the entrance ticket with combined áttractions´. This included a boat ride. Now the queue for this ride was longer than that for Nemesis on bank holiday monday at home. Nae jokes pal. We sat and shimmied up, and waited and queued. It pained me so. We got to the front...ole´! We got on the bo-at, which did a lap of a ses pit of a pond before parking up again and loading us out. Actually to be fair, because the queue had been soooo large, they did 1 1/2 laps. It was the highlight of the zoo!
To compensate, that night we hit the town. Tango is big news here, so we went to
spot the funny animals...
They would be the ones behind me. I'm not even sure what they were due to all the signs being in Spanish a show...or so we thought. Turned out to be a concert music styleee. There was a famous actress in the audience which made the couple on our table way excited, and we shared a bottle of vino tinto - just to be polite of course. The show itself was pretty cool. There was an accordian player with black nail varnish. There was also a heck of a lot of hilarious banter with the crowd...We didn´t understand a single word of it, but I assure you they were comics. We were on the very front table. Cometh the end of this special night everyone stood to sing the national anthem and the famous actress was called onto stage. Waving her microphone around the audience during the anthem, Angela and I struggled to hum in tune as it got swung in our direction. She quickly learnt not to bring the mic our way again!
So enough was had of BA, and after more meat (there are toursits everwhere, who you can pass in the street, and just see in their face that they faced a steak larger than their head for lunch and tackled it too well, so our now undergoing
Deep in the forest dangers lurk
Distracted by parrots a jaguar creeps up the dreaded post-meat sweats), we got a ferry to Uruguay.
