More sheep than people!

After our hard work we thought we deserved a few days off so we headed to Queenstown for the weekend. The scenery is just as beautiful as we remember it - I’ll apologise now for the many photos on this blog, but they are all just too good to leave off! After a bit of persuasion I managed to convince Sam to let us stay in a hostel instead of sleeping in the back of the hearse on a campsite - it gets freezing just now at night time and although we do have super duper new sleeping bags to use, I still wasn’t keen - especially seeing as the hostel is only $12 NZ dollars dearer than the campsites..which is only about £5, so even Sam couldn’t counter argue that one! We were going to walk up Ben Lomond to get the views but after the walk last weekend I have developed two bruised toe-nails (nice) so we had to make do with just walking up to Bob’s Peak, which is the same place that the gondolas take you too. The views are still magnificent out to the Remarkables and over Lake Wakatipu. It's relatively quiet here just now as it is in between seasons, everyone is gearing up for the ski season which starts next month, with the ski fields expecting to open about the second week in June.

Next we went to a little place called Glenorchy where the stunning weather had me doing my best David Bailey impression, snapping everything in sight! There is a great little café there and everyone was dining outside because of the nice weather..it’s strange to think that now is the equivalent of November back home. Another place that we never made it to last time is Arrowtown, a small town that was formed as a result of the gold rush in the 1880s. There are lots of quaint buildings which look like something out of an American western and it’s also famous for it’s many trees, which are on lots of postcards over here due to the magnificent autumn colours that they change to.

Unfortunately after this our good run of weather changed and it became rainy. We had a night in Te Anau but you couldn’t see much because of the fog and also Invercargill but I don’t think this is a bad thing as there isn’t
