Tom Price, Karijini, Pt Hedland

Well, as a place to get stranded, Tom Price Caravan Park is not a bad one. Waiting for fuel, we spent our time doing all our chores - delousing the van, washing and going on walks around the area. Angus had a lot of fun feeding the local birds which were very tame. There were kangaroos which wandered into the park at dawn and dusk and a very nice swimming pool which we gave a workout. We also caught up with a number of other travellers we had met before on the road - common out here.
Once we had restocked (cheapest groceries north of Geraldtown!) we headed out to Karijini National Park and Dales Campground.
Karijini really is a pretty magical place. There has obviously been plenty of rain and there were many new and pretty wildflowers out. Days were warm and nights were freezing. Each day we bushwalked down into the gorges (or 'georges' as some bad spelling guidebook writer tells us). Anyone who has hiked with Steph before would know that this was quite a challenge!. Angus displayed good mountain goat form, Mike walked twice as far as he had to keep coming back to rescue Steph. Apparently the Getaway film crew were in the area, so if you watch the upcoming episode, you may see Steph clinging to a 'cliff' (actually a ledge 2 feet off the ground). We swam in several of the waterholes which were clear and very cold. At night dingoes roamed the campsite and howled at the moon. There were many more georges to explore, but we will have to come back to them.
After 3 nights we have moved on to Port Hedland to contemplate our next destination. This is one noisy town with big trains moving through at night. Could not summon up the energy to walk around the corner to the free Paul Kelly concert, but could hear it from the van. Time suddenly seems very short and the Kimberley awaits.

Allo you groovers - reading with envy of your adventures. Looks like you are all having a ball! Gus maybe you have a new calling - champion fisherman eh? Kavanags coming over in a couple of weeks Hawks in the top 8 so all good in sunny (bloody cold) melbourne. xxxx auntie em

Hi Mike, Steph and Angus, the trip reviews have been fabulous reading, especially the dive with the whale sharks. We are envious about all the fish you have been catching expecially that pink snapper, which I am sure tasted devine. We miss you all, take care xx
