Wellington from up high
view of Wellington from Mount Victoria Hello again,
Here is the next instalment of my blog, being threataning to write this for ages so here goes. Having had a great christmas time with Pete and Gill Winter, I decided to head down to Wellington for New Years eve and to continue the recovery on my ankle.
Wellington is a really cool city, by the sea, and because topography (now theres a clever word to use!) it is built around the hills etc so looks cool with lots of greenery and stuff, but is easy to get around.
Now they say that Wellington is the party capital of New Zealand, and it certainly has a good nightlife there. New Years eve was a good night ending at about 7am. Then spent a couple of days chilling out and checking out some of the local sights. However as my ankle wasnt improving I decided to go and see a physio, who said that realistically to get it healed properly was gonna take 4-6 weeks so I decided to stay in Welly and have physio (all free due to their Accident Compensation Corporation that pays for treatment of injuries sustained in accidents - means you cant sue people
Gravity show
Free acrobatic show - very impressive, obviously I was trying for this effect in the photo!! for personal injury instead).
I couldnt face going to the south Island and not being able to tramp (thats kiwi speak for hiking) and do the outdoor stuff.
So decided to get a job in Wellington and stay there for a while, managed to get a job quite quick through an agency - ended up working for the Inland Revenue Department (yes the tax man!!). But I was working in the policy advice division which writes all the reports and provides the analyis on tax for the minister of revenue to decide on tax laws and stuff. I was basically a PA to 2 managers there, and also word processing and document formatting the reports and papers for their teams. Work was ok and people I was working with were great which makes all the difference. Even if I didn't understand what they were talking about half the time. Ended up working there for 7 weeks which was good for the bank balance and had a lot of fun in Welly.
Stayed in a small backpackers with a really friendly vibe and nice extras like free breakfast and internet etc. World Wide Backpackers on The Terrace to
Wellington sea front
Thats their famous Te Papa museum in the middle anyone heading that way. Met some really cool people at the hostel in several waves as people came and went or moved into flats for the year etc. So had some great times, and memories from there. Think the people involved will agree, too many to list here, but you all know who you are.. hows it going guys and girls?
Unfortunaltely it took a long time for my ankle to heal and had several setbacks with the recovery, but eventually ankle started to improve. Thanks to Mike for all the extra work he did on my ankle - he does sports therapy and Applied Kinesiology which involves balancing muscles to fire correctly and stuff. Quite impressive stuff that he does - check him out at www.hands-on-kinesiolgy.com
Some of the highlights in Wellington were the International Rugby Sevens tournament which was one big fancy dress party in Wellington. There were some seriously dodgy costumes going on - guys in skin tight jump suits etc, which were not nice to see!!
Also went to a Super 14 rugby game between the Wellington Hurricanes and the ACT Brumbies from Australia, the Hurricanes won in the last seconds so was
Rugby time
Super 14 Hurricanes vs Brumbies - Hurrincanes won! a good night.
Also had various festivals and stuff going on, the Cuba Street Carnival was probably the biggest with a weekend of street performers, bands etc and big parade on the saturday night which included some random entries like a massive amoured personnel carrier and a fire truck from wellington airport, all very good but the streets they were driving down are not the biggest at the best of times and were rather full of people as well, but didn't see them run that many people over tho!!
Also borrowed a car from a guy at work (thanks Graeme appreciate it.) to drive around some of the coastline around wellington which was pretty cool, and got up to the high areas around welly to see the city from above and stuff.
went to the welsh bar in wellington to watch some of the six nations games live, but as we lost wasnt great and had left before the wales v england game. oh well.
Well think thats all for now, dont think you really want a day to day account of my time at work.....
