Day 6 Austin To Houston

Austin, Texas To Houston, Texas Mar 1 2007

Bastrop Texas - 175 Years Old TodayBastrop Texas - 175 Years Old TodayBastrop Texas - 175 Years Old Today

Main Street in Bastrop Texas all decorated in the stars and stipes for the visit of the first lady of Texas.
Rising early we had a leisurly breakfast and headed toward Houston. The computer seems to want to take us back downtown to Sixth Street, so we let it have it’s way so that we could continue on from there. We are slowly learning that there are times when you have to ignore it’s childish behaviour and turn a deaf ear. Finally headed south and east on highway 71 we stop in the town of Bastrop. Today is the town’s 175th birthday, and the First Lady of Texas is here to give a speech. Unfortunately we arrive just as she is leaving., but the town is all decorated up with red white and blue so it is all very festive just the same
The weather is absolutely wonderful this morning and it is indeed a great day to be alive. Shortly the smell of roasted pork hits our nostrils and we follow it the quaint restaurant near Main Street called “Graces”. It is irresistible and we must go in. We have lost all control, and yes it was just as good as it smelled.
Once again, feeling back in control we stroll down Main Street and back to the safety of

our car which is stocked with grapes and mini carrots and only stuff that is good for you.

The drive eastward goes quickly and in no time we are in Galveston. We spend a few hours there, and then when rush hour in Houston dies down a bit, we drive north on I-45 to my (Don) favorite Houston restaurant. Bayou City Seafood Restaurant does not disappoint. Joy loved it as much as I did the first time around.
A while later, we checked into the Derek Hotel which is not far from the restaurant. Like one of the reviewers on Trip Advisor said…. “It’s like sleeping at Ikea” Very comfortable hotel, and the staff treated us wonderfully. We would stay here again.
