Its 18 miles across here
Next stop was a cool little town called Flagstaff which is a gateway to the Grand Canyon. The canyon was absolutely amazing, truly out of this world again but for different reasons, it’s just so big you can’t comprehend what you are seeing. Where we first saw the canyon it was 18 miles across..... You look at a trail heading down towards the bottom and it looks like it’s a short walk with few small bushes along a stream, but its actually like 6 miles away and the trees are proper full size trees!!! Don’t think you can ever fully come to comprehend the scale of the place, the photos certainly wont unfortunately.

I then flew from Phoenix to Cancun in Mexico, arrived eventually - it took a while as my flight had a connection in Houston with all the storms and floods so was very delayed and spent the night sleeping on the floor of the airport.

Cozumel is a Caribbean island off the coast of Mexico, which is renowned for its coral reefs and diving the water is warm and clear. I did a training course to become a certified scuba diver which was a lot of

fun. The diving on the coral reef was spectacular, I saw hawksbill turtles, spiny lobsters and lots of tropical fish.

I then went to Tulum which is a small town on the mainland next to a large Caribbean beach, white sand, turquoise warm water and palm trees.... very nice place to hang out. There is also a small Mayan ruins there (Mayan civilization was around 200 to 800AD). Not a big ruins but right on the cliffs so impressive location.

An overnight bus ride (which was a whole lot of fun - hmm!) to Palenque which was the next stop.

So until next time.

so glad to hear from you:)
It was great to get a message from you. How much longer will you be traveling around the world?? I was also at the Grand Canyon many years ago and it was all so unreal...so vast, like you said. My husband has never been there so hope to take him someday. My son Ethan has been doing lots of traveling this year with a trip to the Philippines in the fall and then recently, to Venezuela and now he's in Japan. He was doing mission's work in South America, helping to buy and fix up a safe house for street kids...he took a team of young kids from the school he taught at last year..they loved it! His work in the Philippines was with a remote village in much need of repair from flooding. WOrking with the poor is one of our family's passions:) So he gets to travel a lot too! Please continue to send us updates! Remember, we're the family from the Yosemite Bug! We might be moving this summer to TEnnessee. If you're ever in the area, give us a call:) Blessings.........Linda for all the Elgersmas
