We were pleased to leave Zimbabwe and in fact leaving it is a genuine highlight - crossing the Vic Falls bridge into Zambia. We had a 6 hour drive to Lake Kariba where we are spending 2 nights aboard a houseboat. The boat only has 2 double rooms so we had to draw lots for them. Luckily, or so we thought at the time, Gemma picked one out of the hat.

We chugged along over to the other side of the lake, stopping off in deep water (well away from hippos and crocs) for some surprisingly scary jumping off the boat's top deck. There was talk of an England vs Australia swimming relay race - which ordinarily would be an Aussie victory of course - but the Aussies contrived to cancel it when they learnt that team England included a county-level swimmer, a water baby, an ex-competitive sea swimmer and an admittedly out-of-condition triathlete.

The day was spent drinking and occasionally watching elephants wandering along the shore or drinking themselves. We went out on a smaller tender boat wildlife spotting but saw nothing (possibly something to do with the sun already set and darkness falling quickly). Then we had dinner in the company of approximately a gazillion bugs about the size of a 5p coin which made the white tablecloth look like an infinite chessboard, and spent the evening chatting, drinking and just generally chilling.

At about 2am the fun really started in the form of a thunderstorm. Water poured through the windows and soaked the floor, so we moved our bags onto a table. A few minutes later the first of many leaks in the ceiling above appeared, all over the bed. We placed cups on the bed to try and catch the water, and tried to sleep around them, but with little success. And so we got no sleep, despite having paid $110 for our room for the night.
