so let´s go camping someone said. all right. far from a well-oiled trip, we all either slept in by accident, forgot sleeping bags, or didn´t bring the bug spray. nine people total, two tiny tents, and nine chorizos (sausages) for dinner... we were doing it all wrong. just the way we like it though. by the time gordo, aye and i got to the campground after taking a bus through the city, a train through the suburbs and a boat up the river we were expecting a roaring fire and a merry party eager for us to join. quite the opposite--there they were sitting inside this building playing cards and eating apples. nothing merry in this bunch! they had been there for hours, ¨spend some time outside and you´ll see why¨graham said. ¨the mosquitos are like birds and they´ll lift you up into their nests and beat you like you´re their wives¨brian said. the animosity was fresh and we didn´t dare berate them further.
we´d brought the bug spray so we all lathered up and went looking for firewood. by the time we had a fire worthy of cooking over it was 11:30 and we were TOO hungry. the first three chorizos fell into the coals or got stuck in the grease fire on the the very sooty, very gross grate. down to one choripan (sausage and bread) per person (emma and zeke ate the apples), this was dangerous. gordo washed his ashy links off and put them back on. mine was still charring in the fire. needless to say, we had dinner, late, and with the constant fear that if these weren´t cooked well enough we could get really sick... my vegetarianism seemed like a good idea to hold onto at that point.
we went to sleep finally. five of us outside listening to that persistent, whirring noise that is all to familiar to most everyone in this world. a nagging mosquito is the absolute worst, trying to get inside your ear and through to your brain where it can bite and suck out your very soul. i finally crawled inside graham´s tent but that left poor ole emma suttles out to be bled dry. the next morning she was unrecognizable with a face so swollen she looked like a blow up doll. (see picture!)
all in all, not too eventful of a camping trip but fun and worth documenting! we 4 viajeros are anxious to be on the road but we still have 11 more days to spend in buenos aires, spending as little money as possible! till next time...
