Roughing it (not)
Ok, so the first half of the flight to KL. was easy I pretty much slept the entire trip mind you a few beers at the airport is bound to help. Now I had a 7 hour stop over at KL before my next flight to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and after wandering around the airport for an hour or so I was getting a little restless, so what do you do…….buy your way into one of the travel lounges, brilliant. So after parting with a little rigit I found myself sipping on endless supplies of beer, food, tv and the internet.- not really roughing it by any means.

So the Flight to Sri Lanka. I think I shit myself before even hitting Asia. Not because of bad food or anything, literally because the flight was that horrific that I thought we were going to die. Bad weather, wind and rain were throwing the plane around everywhere and upon landing in Singapore (a stop I was not aware we were having thank you Flight Center) we literally touched down for 3 seconds before an emergency take off again, apparently the pilot couldn’t see too well and had run out of run-way. Not looking forward to the next Sri Lanka airline flight. Bugger..

Finally Colombo, after 20 hours travel and some serious hanging about, I had arrived in Sri Lanka. After meeting an Australian couple on the flight the 3 of us decided to get the public bus from the airport to the center of the city, probably easier to take a taxi but no…lets be different. And different it was. Sri Lankan’s, although a nice people have a tendency to stare….. like a gawking stare, which on a bus of 20 becomes a little uncomfortable at times. Anyway after doing the local thing which was very insightful, I found a tuk tuk (rather he found me) and was whisked to my hostel for the night at Mt Lavina. Finally bed.

First impressions of Colombo (capital of S.L) is that it’s nothing too exciting or unique. In the single day I had walked the main Galle Rd strip,(a 6km endless string of shops, basically selling anything you want from the $2 shop back home) hassled at the frantic markets of Pettah and strolled around the heavily secured Fort. Now due to civil unrest the Sri Lankan government is a bit

on the paranoid side about photograph’s around government building especially the fort. When these guys point there machine guns at you saying no photo’s you listen, well I did.
