Day 3 - We started our day arriving to our apartment at 1:30AM due to a delayed flight. But walking inside the walls of Old Town Dubrovnik with no one there was really cool. Luckily we didn't have to meet our guide Damien until 10 AM. He showed us around the city starting with a cable car ride to the top of a mountain with amazing views. Old Town Dubrovnik is a walled city built in the 1300s (we think), and it is built like a fortress. We are staying inside the walled city, which is awesome until one realizes how many stairs are involved. Everywhere you go, there are stairs. Kirsten was immediately trying to figure out how residents got their furniture into their homes. We climbed almost 80 flights of stairs today and walked over 7 miles, all while not leaving an area much larger than 2 miles in circumference.
The temperature started heating up in the walled city as we were walking around with our second guild Romana as she told us the specifics of the history of the old town. We visited the monastery which had the oldest continuously running pharmacy in the world. The art
is not that impressive, but the history and the views are amazing. Towards the end of our tour our eyes started gazing over as we had only had a croissant for breakfast and it was getting past lunch. The second Romana said her good byes, we bee-lined for food. Our guide told us about a great, cheap sandwich shop where we ended up eating ham and cheese sammies. We had to follow up lunch with some of the best ice cream we have had. With our tummies full of food we were ready to conquer the city again. Well almost, we decided to come back to the room to "freshen up" before our boat tour. Forty-five min later after a power nap, we were refreshed and ready to go.
We headed down to the port area with a number of small fishing boats and boarded a pirate like boat to cruise around the surrounding islands. What we had seen before was an overcrowded vessel filled with tourists. But at 3:05 we left with just the 3 of us. True V.I.P.'s!!! An awesome surprise to not have to deal with anyone else. The trip gave us a different vantage point
of the city and the surrounding area and it was beautiful. We saw a large number of speedos dawning the coast line as we are still trying to convince Dan to wear one when we get on the sail boat.
After our boat ride we headed to walk the fortress walls that surround the city. It is about 2.5 miles around and up and down stairs. Many areas are quite narrow and it was definitely hot. About half way around we stopped for a beer and a rest where we took in great views and an amazing breeze. We continued to the end going up and down more stairs and then headed to another fort on an island just outside of the walled city. More stairs, more amazing views and another stop for beer overlooking a rocky beach with more speedos.
By this time we are getting hungry for dinner. We took the stairs up to our apartment, did a French whore shower and off to dinner. There are a ton of restaurants within the walls so we found one close and had a really nice dinner. All of them have outdoor seating. To end the evening we,
of course, had more ice cream while we sat and listened to some musicians playing the violin and guitar.
Hopefully for the last time we headed up more stairs and back to the room for an early night due to lack of sleep from last night. Tomorrow we meet Damian again and head to Bosnia and Split.
