It just seemed right to finish this 3 month getaway adventure in Rome. Everywhere we went in Spain and of course here in Italy we have seen the massive influence of the old Roman Empire.

We had just 2 full days and as any of you who have been know well, that barely scratches the surface!

But we did OK as, hopefully, the following pics will show.

This definitely rates as one our top adventures together. We will have many great memories of both Spain & Italy to recount in the future.

Until next time, Ciao!

Scott House

An unlikely name for our Rome hotel. The building contained about 5 small hotels, ours was located on the 4th & 5th floors. Good location tho’ with the train station right behind Marlene and plenty of restaurants to choose from

We took a 3 hour guided tour of the remains of Ancient Rome, starting here. The sheer volume of the building was very impressive.
The holes?The holes?
The holes?

The first thing you notice is that the facing is riddled with holes as though it had been shot at, but the guide explain that iron brackets had been used as support in the original construction and were scavenged after the fall of Rome leaving the holes behind.

Over the centuries since the fall of Rome scavengers looted everything they could carry away from the coliseum and other once magnificent buildings.

It takes some imagination to picture how Rome looked in the period when it ruled a vast empire.

He made this drawing as a plan for the rebuilding of St. Peter’s Cathedral but didn’t live to see the end result.

Later architects had other ideas of course; this is St. Peter’s as it looks today. The crowds were enormous...we can’t imagine coming here in summer when, we were told, the crowds would be 3 times larger.

One of the ceilings in one of the many rooms, all packed with priceless treasures. We spent some time trying to absorb the beauty of Michelangelo’s Cistine Chapel...no photos allowed....but they could’t do it justice anyway.

Probably the best known of Rome’s many beautiful fountains.

We were told that an average of €3000 is recovered from this fountain every day!

It seemed that Rome attracts people looking to fleece the hordes of tourists...we had a number of attempts made on us.....all part of the experience!
