What a fabulous day! Started the day with a 2 hour bus ride out of Hanoi traffic. We were then able to switch to our bikes for a mainly peaceful 40 km ride through a valley of small ethnic villages supporting intense agriculture. After lunch the sun came out for the first time this trip for the start of another 35 kms ride on quiet rural roads of steep descents followed by tough hills. The route passed spectacular karst cliffs along the Da River in the Mai Chau region. Night comes early in Vietnam & we arrive in the dark.

Mai Chau is a stunningly beautiful valley of small villages surrounded by green mountains, lakes and home to friendly hilltribe peoples with Thai heritage. Our accommodation for the night was a stilt-house homestay with basic but surprisingly comfortable facilities & was a hugely memorable experience. Language differences were overcome with a delicious home-cooked meal, well earned beers and traditional dancers for entertainment.
