Are there any Professional Photographers out there on this site that got there start writing travel blogs?

Are you a professional photographer? Do you dream of being one?

I'm curious to see if anyone on here has been hired for a photography job from their travels, their blogs, or their photos on this site. I've been traveling and taking photos for many years, but only within the last year been posting blogs. I'm currently trying to get jobs as a travel photographer and am just curious if others on here are doing the same. I love taking photos and have been taking classes for the past 2 years. I've been told my photography is excellent and have even sold a few framed prints. But my dream job, would have to be traveling, taking photos, and writing articles for magazines or books.

Just curious on everyones comments, similar dreams, actual realities, or just advice. Thanks for any help.

We'd probably be surprised if we learnt just how many of the travelblog photos that made it into tourist brochures, documents and other websites, and I would suspect that more than 95% of them did so uncredited.

There must be a fair amount of fellow bloggers who nurture similar dreams; getting paid for seeing the world, now that's something I'd jump into with little consideration. However, it is a competitive world out there, and I haven't really made any effort to improve on my photographic skills or advertise myself, so I suspect it will remain but a vague dream for years to come. I did get the occasional request to use my photos from time to time, not because they were spectacular but because they happened to document something unusual. I've got varied requests from such odd places as an indie rockband, a Dubai girls school, a guy documenting the world's lighthouses, a Buddhist hippie group, a researcher on the Aral Sea and the British police. Few were interested in ponying up any cash though... so no biz for me so far.

Good luck on pursuing your goal! Reply to this

Hey, exposure is half the battle. Getting your photos in stuff and credited is still something to be proud of. I've got a few obscure magazines and websites asking for the same kind of thing. Not much budget, but at least I'm on there. In the end, it's all experience that I hope can land me a job somewhere or for some travel company. Even getting an article here or there would be great. I've seen some amazing photos on this site, so I'm just curious. Anyone else??

Hi, i have spent most of my career as a newspaper photographer and picture editor. Its tough! really competitive....and mostly a case of 'who you know'. Travel photography is a dream job for all photographers.
My advice would be.........if you are determined and passionate enough, stay believing in yourself, you will find a way.
Being at the right place at the right time often helps. But creative people need to keep focussed and not let doubt get you at any time. Good luck. Reply to this

Thanks Pinx. I have the desire and passion, and don't plan on giving up anytime soon. I have recently been hired to write articles for an online restaurant/hotel/winery review site. This along with my photography being displayed in a few galleries and on exhibit at a local company should get me started in the right direction.

Thanks again,
Nathan

Nathan, having just checked out your web-site i feel such an idiot dishing out my mediocre advice. Your photographs are beyond stunning. It would be an unfair world if you didn't succeed in making this your first career. Regards, px Reply to this

Thanks pinx! That means a lot coming from a professional photgrapher. I hope its true, as I really do love photography. I do wish this was my first job, but my last 8 years have been devoted to other media types. Travel photgraphy and fine art on the side are definately my current goals, so might as well try while I'm still young. Thanks again for the advice and the compliment! Cheers.
