'Downgrading' camera gear for traveling

Have you ditched a bulky SLR in favor of something more... lug-gable? How did you find it?

Thanks Jo! I'd looked at the G10 but had a few reservations, but the Canon G1 X sounds more interesting. Will need to check it out next time I'm passing a camera shop.

It will be a little while until our next trip, so I have some time to look around (and hope that a perfect dSLR x compact will be released in that time!). Reply to this

I have also checked out the G1x but in the end I thought that since I was trying to 'slim down' my camera gear I'd go for something smaller - I ended up with the x10 (I think the x20 has just come out) which has a smaller sensor than the G1x, but faster shooting, smaller size and still retains the manual control options.

I should mention that I've been on the road for a few weeks now and haven't missed the SLR as much as expected, except on a few occasions when I missed my 10.5 fisheye... and I do love just being able to throw it in my pocket when I'm on the go. Reply to this

For the past month I have been using a Canon SX50 bridge type camera.

For those who want one camera and not carry a variety of lenses, you will find this a good camera. Night photography is good, low light as in caves is excellent.

With the SX40 I used both optical and digital zoom. With the SX50 and 1200mm equivalent lens, I have turned off digital. Still learning this camera's capabilities, but some good improvements such as manual focus now operates without resetting other functions through accidental nudging of the focus wheel. Reply to this
