I am going on trip next month, but not sure whether to spend money in new DSLR camera or stay with my old 5MP Canon PowerShot. It's a well known fact that traveling with a big camera is really uncomfortable, but DSLR cameras always provide best picture quality. So far I have found Nikon D40, I found it at
for $599 through a discount deal available at If you guys have any better recommendations, please let me know.
Thanks.. Reply to this Hey have you considered hybrid cameras? These are cameras that have some of the same capabilities as DSLRs, but are smaller and more compact. Also, if you are not used to shooting with a DSLR, these can be invaluable as they have a number of automatic settings. Canon Powershot G range are good for this, have you checked out the G11? There is now a G12 but reviews seem to suggest this isn't as good as the previous model.
I have a panasonic lumix lx3 which I am taking around the world with me. It is similar to a hybrid camera, it is slightly cheaper than the Canon G range, but I chose it as it was quite a bit smaller. It really is a great camera if you look at the reviews.. it has a leica lens and shoots amazing pictures.. it has an amazing wide angle lens, low noise levels in dark settings, HD video, the opportunity to add zoom lens, and it is very compact. You should have a look at some sample pics taken with one of these.
It depends what you are looking for though really.. with all cameras there will be disadvantages...
Hope you find the right camera!

Reply to this I have the D40 and it is small compared to the higher end dslrs but it's also pretty old now... And at only 6mp I'm aware that my nice pics will never get blown up more than about a4-size... something to keep in mind maybe... Other than that it's fine , and of course 'what you point it at' is more important that the technical specs of the camera!
Something like a d60 (I think that's the next one up) would make a good compromise possibly?
