Buying a camera in South America

Where and how expensive?

My camera was stolen in Santiago, Chile and I am now in northern Argentina. I am headed to Bolivia and I was wondering if anyone had any information about how to go about getting a new camera. I think La Paz might be my best bet although I would love to get one sooner than that so I can take pictures on my way through Bolivia. What should I expect to pay compared to U.S. prices? Thanks for any advice! Reply to this

About twice the US price in south america is normal.

Many countries have high import taxes. Cheapest will be Paraguay (Ciudad del Este) - but probably not worth going out of your way for.

As a general rule - you'll get better prices in the big cities compared to small towns.

Brazil has the highest prices in my experience. Reply to this

I know this post may be too late to help the original poster but perhaps someone else may benefit. A few months ago I was in Argentina and needed a memory card. I had to pay $45 US for a 2G memory card that I could have purchased in the US for around $10. I noted lens prices, camera accessories ,etc. in that shop and found all the prices to be substantially more than the US. Reply to this
