I have been working at Sta. Lucia since September, 24th. I have had the opportunity to observe and learn from brilliant, kind physicians here. Last week I learned how to properly examine a patient: Inspection, auscultation, palpation, and percussion. Dra. Matrissa drew out schematics of the pulmonary system, cardiovascular system, and gastrointestinal system. She explained the quadrants and the reason for watching, palpating, listening, and percussing the areas that we do; what is considered normal and abnormal during the exam. And for anyone who knows me, I thrive in an environment regulated by reason and theory.

I have seen many diagnoses, especially lots of colds and flus. I met a young man with AIDS who was only 23 years old. We gave him a referral to a specialty clinic. He had this smile and grace about him though that warmed my own soul and, for this, meeting him was an inspiring experience for me. Although, it brought me great sorrow to see such a bright, young man with such a horrible, terminal disease. I saw a young boy with pitiriasis alba and Dra. Matrissa broke down the pathology of the disease for me. I’m glad that is a reversible condition. There are a lot of cases of arthritis, bronchitis, laryngitis, and dehydration.

Today, I administered around 15 vaccinations for Hepatitis B and influenza. I also administered penicillin to 2 people. This is my first time giving shots and I did so completely independently with little to no supervision or guidance… apart from the medical coordinator of the VivePeru program giving me a one-on-one instruction on injections a few days before. Thanks, Karen, if you are reading this! You’re awesome!
