5am waiting at the checkpoint! Today we got woken up at 3.30am!!! We had to have breakfast and make it to the check point by 5.30am. So we ate at 4.10am and made it to the check point by 4.45am so had to wait for 45min in the dark for the check point to open. Made slightly worse by Rach’s head torch being stuck on very bright very annoying disco mode!! Only slightly unintentional attention seeking! Anyway we then made it through and trekked for 2 hours towards the sun gate and saw Machu Picchu. We were super lucky as we had a clear day and watched the sun rise over the town. It was stunning! Apparently the last few weeks have been raining so much and it was very hard to see anything after4 days of walking to get there! So we were all stoked. By the time we got down to Machu Picchu we were all so completely shattered that we just wanted to sleep but had a 2 hour tour of the city. It was very cool but we just wished we were more with it.
After we headed to the nearest town and had 7 hours to kill until our train
home. So we slept in the restaurant, ate and make our way to the hot springs to soothe our aching bodies. Very weird – orange and had sand at the bottom but great all the same. Very long day but such a great experience!
