Update from Jack,

Buenos dias amigos! We´ve now been in Cusco for a little over a day and we are all in love. The elevation is VERY high, so yesterday we took it easy to avoid altitude sickness (headaches, nausea and unhappy GI tracts). We walked around the city and got the basic lay of the land, and it´s beautiful. All the streets are these little cobblestone alleys that snake over the mountainous city. You´ll be walking, short of breath from the thin air, then all of a sudden you are presented with a spectacular view over the city and the surrounding hillside neighborhoods. Many of the buildings are converted from old Spanish colonial homes, meaning a very plain front door that leads into a charming courtyard with shops and restaurants. Some of these colonial buildings are built on the foundations of Incan buildings, creating a strange mashup of cultural/architectural styles. It´s really interesting just walking around, and we eventually found our way into one of the aformentioned courtyards and found a nice restaurant. Turns out, it was one of the best meals any of us had ever had. It was incredibly fancy, and every dish was a tasty blend of local and international culinary influences. We enjoyed seeing the city at night on the walk home, and we all agreed that Cusco is a whole other world. I´m so glad this is the city in which we´re spending the most time.

Today we´re gearing up for some more rigorous sightseeing including some ruins and museums, and we´ve booked a rafting tour for tomorrow! As stressful as it was to navigate the busses through the blockades and strikes that were on and off for the last month, now that we are here in Cusco we are reaping the benefits of the lack of tourists. We´re getting lots of positive attention and don´t have to deal with crowds. We´ve even started to recognize people we met in other cities!

Well Tessa and Devin have finished getting ready while I wrote this, and we´re all rearing to get on with another day in this great city, so for now I´ll say hasta luego!

PS- Sorry we´ve been slacking on uploading photos, but we´re spending all our time having fun! Eventually we´ll catch up, promise.
