Rio Bamba

Sarah’s long-time friend, Kiris McKoontz, had put a bug in our years ago about joining her on one of her Medical Missions someday. So we were delighted when it looked like it was going to work out perfectly in Ecuador. Kiris and the organization that she helped manage, called Amigos De Salud, were going to be in Rio Bamba in August 2011. All we had to do was be there.

We timed our travel well and arrived in Rio Bamba on the same day as Kiris. Because it was late, we met up the next morning at the hotel where she was staying with the medical group. It was great to see Kiris, who is always a great laugh, and what seemed like a few minutes later – we were on our way to scrub in!

It was definitely a bit surreal, as I aided a hernia surgery.
