Humpback whales
Just meters from the boat!! They are huge! Isla de la Plata - Silver Island
Yesterday, we took a day trip to Isla de la Plata, 20 miles off the coast of Puerto Lopez. It was about a 1 and a half hour boat ride to the island. Along the way we stopped to watch the humpback whales just meters from our boat. At first there were only 2 whales, but apparently the sound of the boat motor “calls” to the whales so in the end there were about 5 or 6 whales swimming near the boat. There are enormous creatures (3-4 tons). It was very neat to see. On the island there are two different paths you can take, each path is about 7-10km in length and takes about 2-3 hours to walk. Because of the national park regulations, only one boat load of people can enter the pathways every 15 minutes and of the group half must take one trial and the other half go the other way. Brad, Brian, Kirsten, and Coulton took the more challenging trail in hopes to see the sea lions but they were not in luck. They did, however, see the only four albatross that live on the island, along with blue
Blue Footed Boobies
Isla de la Plata was very populated with these birds. They live in pairs. footed boobies. Alysia and I took the other path. We saw lots of blue footed boobies just feet from the path, along with frigate birds and 2 of the 6 red footed boobies that live on the island. On the way back, the boat stopped at a designated area for snorkelling. Brian and Coulton braved the cool waters but were disappointed as there wasn’t much to see. Back on the mainland, we ate dinner at one of the many beach bars - hamburgers and fries...with an Ecuadorian twist...the fries are part of the burger! This morning the weather is rainy. Not sure what are plans for the day are as the kids are all still sleeping. Tomorrow we fly back to Quito.
Love to all.
