The beautiful indigenous people of Cotacachi, called OtavaleƱos, are part of the magic here. The long skirts and lacy blouses the women wear are striking. The men wear regular workclothes during the day and traditional dress for special occasions, like the wonderful street dancing and processions we've been witnessing during the celebration of Santa Anita.
About 40 indigenous villages surround Cotacachi and their residents live very much the way their ancestors lived. They raise livestock and farm small pieces of land with hand tools. They grow corn, potatoes, and other vegetables. They also weave colorful wool and cotton goods to sell in the open markets.
Most villages have a school, but lack of teachers, supplies, and space is a problem. Also, children are often needed to work to help support the family, to the detriment of their education.
There are many lessons Norte Americanos can learn from these beautiful people about the simple joys of life. Family seems to be everything here. There's a genuine sweetness to the people.
By the way, there's rumored to be a pub in Cotacachi, but no one can ever find it when it's open. What does that say?
