Hola!
Aside from spending time in Cartagena, Laura and I also made a trip up the coast to a small fishing town called Taganga for 2 days. Set in a small bay on the Caribbean Sea, Taganga was a really nice laid back spot to chill out for a day and the jumping off point to visit the beautiful Tayrona National Park.
After a 5 hour bus ride to Santa Marta, followed by a taxi ride to Taganga, we were lucky to be able to get a room at the most popular hostel in Taganga called La Casa de Felipe. This was a great spot. Tons of common space on 3 different levels (the top level was littered with hammocks and great views of the bay for the sunset), nice rooms and a great restaurant that filled up at night with people from all over town. After the bus ride we toured around the waterfront a bit and then took a short boat-taxi ride to the nicest beach in town called Playa Blanca (you've probably noticed that's a pretty popular name- it just means "white beach"). This was a nice spot. Crystal clear warm water, very hot, just a
bit crowded but relaxing nonetheless.
For day 2 we did a day trip to Tayrona National Park. It turned out that doing the park as a day trip was not nearly enough time unfortunately (you could camp over night which is what we should have done). The bus ride took a good 1.5hrs longer than expected so by the time we reached the entrance (still a 45min-1hr walk ahead of us to reach the beach) we were pretty pressed for time. Regardless, we still enjoyed our time in one of the most beautiful spots we have been on the trip. You'll see from the pictures, there is just something about white beaches combined with jungle/rock outcroppings that is absolutely stunning. When we reached the entrance we decided to hop on horses for the 1hr stretch because we had been putting off horse-riding for sometime and it was near the top of Laura's list of things left to do. It was the first time I had been on a horse and we both had a good time. The first beach you reach is called Arrecifes which is too rough to swim at but absolutely beautiful. We walked another 20mins or
so on the beach and through some jungle paths to the second popular spot called La Piscina which is where we relaxed for our remaining time. This was another absolutely incredible spot: clear, warm water, white sand, quiet! The third beach down the line was called El Cabo and it's supposed to also be stunning we just ran out of time- another time I guess. After a 1.5hr hike out we hopped on the bus and headed back to Taganga for the night.
The next day we bused it back to Cartagena to spend our last few days which is all in the previous blog.
As you can tell, we have had some time on our hands lately to pump out these blogs. We are currently stuck in Peru (long story as to why we are back there) waiting on Brazilian Visas. You'll learn all about it in the next blog.
Thanks for reading,
Greg and Laura
