Towards a more autochthonous Independence Day

I used to see the celebrations for the Day of the Independence mainly as a march of primary and secondary students and their teachers attending an improvised stage show in front of the main church of the village; this will be customarily followed by some readings, some recitation of pledges for how proud we feel of being Colombian and... that was it, to be honest. This year, by contrast, I was able to see a more interesting show which reunited more communities coming together to celebrate our country in the name of folk. Indeed, now, and for the seventh year, the celebration has become something more of a display of talent, which I enjoyed very much; portraying some of our multicultural values while allowing us to still feel very proud of our roots and our history was more of a two-fold proposal, which really worked.



Hacia un día de la independencia más autóctono



Solía ver las celebraciones del Día de la Independencia como una marcha de estudiantes de primaria y secundaria junto con sus profesores presenciando el show en una tarima improvisada en frente de la iglesia principal del pueblo; esto era normalmente seguido de algunas lecturas, recitaciones casi interminables de juramentos destacando el por qué nos sentimos tan orgullosos de ser Colombianos. Esta vez, pude apreciar algo diferente que me encantó pues ya por séptimo año, la celebración ha cambiado de forma y se vuelve aún más interesante ver comunidades unidas celebrando su país, y todo en nombre del folclor; no hay necesidad de agregar que el conjunto refleja algo de nuestros valores multiculturales mientras nos permite sentirnos igualmente de orgullosos de nuestras raíces y de nuestra historia. Esa fue la fórmula del éxito del show.



Therefore, groups from several Colombian regions came punctually to this year's cultural appointment taking place in the North of Santander; both artists and organisers managed to show visitors to Pamplona a sample of their village, of their traditions, of their families and a bit of their hearts; their presence and their mise-en-scene indirectly contributed to telling us some of their tales, the same ones that form the core values of the Colombian identity; in the background, a shy musical country that is intending to forget cruel realities and is looking at that mere music and folk as a sort of showcase to culturally display more of a different side of our land, even if some tv producers, by still filming and exporting drug lord stories, don't seem to want to shake off that dangerous tag associated with "us". Anyway, on stage, there were names of groups that I didn't have a clue existed and even rhythms I hadn't enjoyed watching before. That's what I call emotional patrimony, if I can say that... sorry, Shakespeare if that's not good English, well, that is, if you also existed. 😊



Así, pudimos ver grupos de varias regiones Colombianas, quienes acudieron puntualmente a la cita cultural, esta vez tuvo lugar en el Norte de Santander; y así, pudieron mostrarle a los visitantes de Pamplona, pedazos culturales de sus pueblos, de sus tradiciones, de sus familias y un poco de sus corazones; su presencia y su puesta en escena contribuyeron de forma indirecta a contarnos algo de sus historias, las mismas que forman el eje colombiano, un país musical que está intentando olvidarse de realidades crueles a medida que va incentivando tesoros musicales como una oportunidad para lograr tal objetivo al mostrar un lado diferente de nuestra idiosincracia. Pero no sé si lo logran cuando hay tantas series televisivas hechas aquí que al exportarlas, parecen querer continuar promocionando la etiqueta de país peligroso que nuestro país se ha ganado durante tantos años. En fin, ese es otro tema. En tarima, desfilaron ante nuestros ojos nombres de grupos que yo no tenía ni idea de que existieran e incluso ritmos musicales que antes nunca había disfrutado. Eso es lo que llamo patrimonio emocional, si se puede decir eso, o si existe como término, lo siento, Cervantes.



On the way to Pamplona



It was not difficult to follow my youngest sister in her attempt to taking my parents to the Parque Agueda Gallardo in Pamplona, a small town known as the Patriot city as there was this big celebration of the Colombian Independence Day. I love the name they coined for the concert: "The T Generation" T as in TALENT, even better as it was autochthonous and as such, they put on a great show of music and regional folk, all displayed through some popular dance samples featuring a great deal of young artists from the whole country. Yeah man -as Esteman would put it- we were able to admire a great variety of musical rhythms such as vallenato, country folk, salsa, llanera music and bambucos. The mise-en-scene was coordinated by the Ministry of Culture, great initiative if you ask me. At the end of the show, there was a small concert featuring Esteman, a guy whose energy had us dance on such a cold day. By the way, I think he's been overlooked in the music industry; I only wish he had recorded his Facebook song in English, that would've been a bit of a hit.



Así, no fue difícil decirle sí a la idea de mi hermana menor que quería sacar a mis papás, llevarlos a la ciudad friíta, que no es para menos conocida como la ciudad patriota, y así fue fácil llegar nuevamente al parque Agueda Gallardo, para presenciar la gran celebración del día de la Independencia Colombiana. Me fascinó el nombre que utilizaron para crear el evento: "Generación T" con una gran T de TALENTO COLOMBIANO y mucho mejor si es autóctono; como tal, montaron un gran show combinando música y folclor, todo presentado en algunas muestras de artistas de todo el país. Es verdad, pues pudimos admirar y bailar con diferentes ritmos musicales tales como vallenato, campesina, salsa y bambinos. La puesta en escena estuvo coordinada por el Ministerio de Cultura, lo cual me parece una gran iniciativa; al final del show, hubo un pequeño concierto de Esteman, un cantante que pienso le debería ir mejor porque me parece que tiene mucha chispa con la cual nos hizo bailar en tremendo frío, me pregunto como le hubiera ido si su primera canción de No te metas a mi Facebook la hubiera hecho en inglés porque creo que hubiese sido un hit.



There were also some performances of acrobats, jugglers who were much better than the ones you see every day, when the red headlights have you wait on almost every Colombian avenue; truth is that with the arrival of so many venezuelians, waiting for a red light to turn green has now become synonymous with watching some circus stuff, even if you don't want it 😊 . On a hindsight, those acts on stage were nothing but a great chance to value the ways how small groups are formed and how serious they are about improving their natural talents for you can't help but thinking about the amount of time they devote to art with all those rehearsals to give great shows. The organisers even thought about the rest of the country as they joined forces to televise the concert for it was also available to those people who not wanting to get wet -as it poured down for the whole afternoon in our beloved Pamplona- decided to stay in their house savouring a lovely coffee to warm themselves.



Hubo también algunas muestras de circo como acróbatas, malabaristas que fueron incluso mejores que los que diariamente ve uno al pie de los semáforos, porque esperar ahora para que una luz cambie en una avenida colombiana es como estar en un circo con la llegada de tantos venezolanos haciendo sus acrobacias. Ahora que lo pienso, los actos del 20 de julio me permitieron pensar en la gran organización que debe haber detrás de todos esos grupos y lo serio que se vuelven frente a sus talentos naturales y sus muchos ensayos para lograr tanta perfección. Especialmente, ahora que se incluyó a tantos artistas de otras regiones, los organizadores igualmente unieron sus fuerzas para televisar el concierto y así, lo hicieron disponible para los que no se quisieron mojar ese día, porque Pamplona llovió a cántaros y los más hogareños decidieron mejor quedarse en sus casas saboreando su delicioso café para calentarse.



All in all, kudos to the organizers as they were able to bring to Pamplona a great array of concerts for free.



Gran reconocimiento a los promotores del evento por traer a pamplona una gran cantidad de conciertos y todo gratis.

2011: Bogotá, 2012: Popayán, 2013: Barranquilla, 2014: Villa de Leyva, 2015: Palmira, 2016: Manizales, and finally, 2017: Pamplona, well, the only celebration I have attended but the one that allowed me to see opportunities for big talent as the celebrations in Colombia are only about to start.
